RESOLUTION NO. 624-09
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
ZEPHYRHILLS, FLORIDA, OPPOSING THE PROPOSED
MODIFICATIONS TO US 301 BY THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION; AND PROVIDING FOR SEVERABLITY AND AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, having been elected by the residents of the City of Zephyrhills, City Counc 1
believe that they are in the best position to know and understand what its residents want and nee
in the way of programs and services; to make the decisions affecting the unique character of th
City by preserving or enhancing the lifestyle enjoyed by its residents; and
WHEREAS, the City of Zephyrhills's future interest rely heavily on redevelopment f
the Downtown and surrounding Community Redevelopment area; and
WHEREAS, the City of Zephyrhills's Comprehensive Plan's Transportation Element
reflects the preferred alternative that provides a"context sensitive solution"for U.S. Hwy. 301 t
enable a more traditional redevelopment; and
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY O
• ZEPHYRHILLS, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The City requests a re-evaluation of the Planning, Design & Engineerin
("PD&E") to reconsider the City's preferred alternative that was previously approved wit
modifications that address previous concerns from Florida Department of Transportatio
("FDOT").
SECTION 2. The City is interested in working collaboratively with FDOT to ensure
timely reevaluation of the PD&E to complete the process and not jeopardize committe
programmed funds.
SECTION 3. The City requests that FDOT transfer to the City the section of U.S. 30
from A Avenue north to the intersection of Fort King Road and U.S. 301 to the City. Sai
transfer would provide the City the opportunity to develop the area as a context sensitiv
traditional main street while the pass through trips could route to one-way pairs.
SECTION 4. The City .is concerned that FDOT representatives are insistent o
proceeding with the current PD&E and unwilling to examine the City's proposed alternatives.
SECTION 5. The City has consulted with multiple planning consultants who hay
expressed concerns over FDOT's recommendation regarding modifying US 301 into a one-lan
thoroughfare through the heart of the city and the potential negative impacts on the communi ,
local businesses and the City's redevelopment efforts.
SECTION 6. The City Clerk is hereby directed to provide copies of this execute
resolution to House Representative W. Weatherford and FDOT Secretary.
SECTJO t..'7; - This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its adoption.
This Resolution wasadopted at a regular meeting of the City Council on the 9th day of
November 2009.
