2304.3 Crawl Space Construction
2304.3.1 Crawl spaces under buildings without basements shail be ` �`
� ventilated in accordance with 1804.6.3.1.
23Q4.3.2 All woad framing and sheathing less than 8 inches {203 mm)
� fxom exposed earth in exterior walls that rest on treated wood, concrete or
masonry foundations shall he approved naturally durable or pressure

joists, girders and subfloor, are less than 8 inches (203 mm} above the
harizontal prajection of the outside ground level and extend toward the
outside ground beyond the plane regresented by the interior face of the
foundation wall studs, such elements shall be approved naturally durable or
pressure ireated wood.
2304.3.4 When wood joists ar the bottom of woad structural floors without

1804.6.3 Openings.
� 1$04.6.3.1 Ventiladon. Crawl spaces under buildings without basements
^ shail be ventilate�t by approved mechanical means or by openings in
faundatian wa11s. i���enings shall be arranged ta provide cross vendlation
and shall be cavered with corro�ion-resistant wire mesh of not Iess than 2/4
inch (6.4 mm) nor more than 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) in any dimension.
Openings in faundatian walis sha1I be nat Iess tt�an the follawing:
1. Where wood flaor systems are used, such openin�,� �hall have a net
area of nat less than 1 sq ft(O.a93 m�}far each I50 sq ft(14 m2) of
crawl space.
2. Where other than wood floor systems are used, such openiugs shall
be not less than 1 I/2 sq ft (0.14 m2 } of net opening for each IS
linear feet(4572 rnm)or major fractian thereof of exterior wall.
3. Where asphait saturated feit weighing 55 Ib {2.7 kglm2) per square,
lapped at least 2 inches (51 mm) at joints, or 4 mil (0.102 mm) '
golyethylene lapped at least 4 inches {102 mm) at jaints, oz other
approved vapor retarder is installed over the ground surface, the
required net area of openings may ba reduced to 10%of that required
� above.There shall be ane ventilation opening within 3 ft(914 mrn}of
� each corner, and these shall be of equal size totaling a minimum of
� 50%of required apenings. '

4. An operable vent louver shall be pernutted only where an approved
vapor barrier is instalied over the graund surface. `
5. Where cannbustian equipment is installed within a crawl space, air
for combustion shail be pravided in accordance with 745.I.1.4,281Q,
and Chapter 7 of the Standazd Mechanical Code.
� 18Q4.6.3.2 Access.Usable crawl spaces under buildings without basements
shalt be provided with a minimum of one access opening nat less than
18x24 inches (457x610 mm). Acce�s openings shall be readily accessible
and provided with a daar or device that may be easily removed or operated.
