The JROTC program was newly established this o
year and is the first of its kind in Pasco County. Col-
onel
Mike Cockill and Sergeant Major John Mc-
Maines,
recent active Army retirees, are the ZHS
JROTC teachers.
JROTC's objective is to provide a military instruc-

nation. The program develops in each cadet good
citizenship, self-reliance, leadership, responsiveness
to constituted authority, and the ability to live and
work cooperatively with others. Likewise, JROTC im-
proves students' writing and speaking skills, stresses
the importance of physical fitness in maintaining good
health, and teaches basic military skills.
JROTC isa-four-year program offering one elective
credit per year. Some 192 ZHS students (over 17% of
the student body)enrolled in J ROTC classes this year.
