During her years of high school, Brenda was an outside hitter for her team Since then, many rules and aspects of the game have changed For instance, they never used to have rally scoring. When playing a game. they could only get a point when their team served. This re- sulted in long games and only played the best two out of three. In present day. the volleyball team has rally scoring and plays the best three out of five because of the fast pace of the games. "We also only played to fif- teen points."Brenda explained, compared to the current twenty-five points needed to score per game. "We never wore spandex either, just longer shorts,"she explained Her daughter, Lindsey Arnold class of 2009,also played vol- leyball during her high school career and played setter all four years. After high school, she received a scholarship to the University of South Florida for track and field Although she earned a scholarship for a dif- ferent sport.Lindsey was committed to the school's volleyball team and worked hard as one of their captains A captain on the current volleyball team. I not only play vol- leyball for my school.but I also play competitively For both teams I play the position of the libero, which is just a fancy word for back row special- ist. Traveling around Florida and Georgia to play in tournaments is very exciting. My plan for the future is to hopefully get a volleyball scholar- ship to a big college. My dream has always been to get a scholarship to a big college. like UCF or FSU. but if that doesn't end up happening, I will be equally happy to receive an academic scholarship. A member of the original 1998 swim team and 1999 graduate,Josh Borders says,"It would be nice to see the combined efforts of the county and city commissioners to split the bill of the pool so the kids at Zephyrhills can keep their team. In my time, I had a lot of time to swim and never had to worry about the pool closing down,or even the prob- r lems.of the next year."Unfortunately, that cannot be said for the swimmers of this year Lettie Clark said, "I wish the pool could stay open, not just for me but also for the swimmers of next year. The prospects of possibly not having a pool this year worried me because I had a few scholarships that were based totally on my ability to swim w ;W Our swim team program has been one of the fastest teams in dis- tricts and conference The team owes a lot of that to Lettie Clark's mother. She has been a personal coach to her, as well as to the whole team. Of course though, the actual coaches should be thanked as well. Ms. Shannon sws A Matthews, who coached the original team, changed her workouts halfway through coaching Josh's team. and both swimmers confirmed that her rigor- ous training helped exponentially Both Josh Borders and Lettie Clark were regional qualifiers and state contenders Josh shared, 'My favorite thing was the two state meets I attend- ed 'Lettie with the same love for states. included, "One of my favorite memo- ries was when a swimmer named. Jasper Starnes ran into a glass door at a swim party." In the end, they loved the team and wished it continued on to their college years. By Jordan Moss 1
