Weightlifting has been at this schooTssince 1988.Alumni Jay Mullis,a 1989 — )
graduate, was on the team when it all began.A lot has changed since then. In 1989
weightlifting wasn't really thought out, lifting wise. It was mainly about how much
you could put up in the air and not about the technique. Currently, the coach _________
has lifters work more with the muscle groups and technique because the f
weight will come in later.A few important thing that have not changed in high
school weightlifting are the things needed to gain muscle. "Protein, amino *,.
acids, and hard work are essential to gain muscle the healthy way,"stated j
Jay Mullis.
Danielle 0'Donnell and Terrance Stewart have been weightlift-
ing their entire high school career. During the season, they have to do
different workouts everyday to focus on certain muscle groups. For ex-
ample, one day they will do legs, and the next day they will do triceps.
Another thing that has not changed is the practice of not working out one
to two days before a meet.Within those days, players have to make sure
to take in a bunch of protein and extra water.
A typical meet consists of weighing in for your weight class.;
once everyone is in weighed in,the benching part begins followed by lifts.
The clean and jerk finishes off each meet.Danielle boasts that she has put
up 115 for benching and 110 for clean and jerk; these numbers boost her
confidence.Terrance, who has put up 250 for benching and 225 for the clean
and jerk, likes how it helps him stay in shape during the off season of football.
Jay Mullis has lifted 320 while benching and 265 with the clean and _.,
jerk.He said that being a weightlifter,in his high school years, gave him a stronger
skeletal system and has allowed him to play with and carry his kids around. It has
also helped him save peoples'lives because he is a firefighter.

Whether it is between John Smoltz, Chipper Jones, or even the ZHS baseball
— , , team players, baseball is America's most original sport and favorite pastime. An icon of
athletic history at ZHS, Mr. John Clements was the athletic director for 27 years, base-
ball coach for 21 years, and taught for an amazing 35 years! He wasn't just forgotten
{ either, the ZHS baseball field was dedicated to,and named after,Mr.Clements.
M-; '' Mr.Clements took ZHS to the state championships an incredible three
•^,.. ^-*-' times! Even though we lost all three games, the scores show just how much our
•. ., ._ * players were willing to push it(4:3,7:6,and 1:0). In all of those games,the team
only lost by one point. Mr. Clements, was definitely worthy of getting the field
named after him too.He signed with the St.Louis Cardinals and was awarded
- : a plaque for being the one out of five American high school coaches to win
\\ 400 games.
The baseball team has changed a bit since then. Right now,the play-
ers have a nice locker room, field and stands. When Mr. Clement played, his
players had to get dressed in a donated chicken coup.
Seniors Codey and Casey Yingling believe that with their team can go
,t far with just a little bit of confidence and hard work. With practices six days a
week, the team is dedicated to success. The Yinglings love the sport and know
that,"Every strike brings you closer to the next homerun!"stated Codey. Each
plans to pursue baseball in college.
