• Both the class of 1955 senior class president, Ernie Peeples, and 2011 presi-
dent, Rainas Wao, agree that leading the student body in a positive direction was their

main goal. As members of student council, these gentlemen understand the impor-
i. tance of hard work, communication, and initiative. They both see the school com-
munity as a family, and it was their job to make things better for everyone.
One of Mr. Peeples goals during his tenure as class president was
to promote getting a new gym for the school. According to him, "...the show-
ers were old and the wooden floors had holes." This made the gym unsafe
in his eyes. He set out to convince the administration and district to invest in
a new facility. Rainas'largest initiative has been obtaining an open campus
policy. He has held meetings with students and administration to discuss the
possibilities and written letters to the school board. This goal has not been
obtained as of yet;however,Rainas has taken the first step.
When asked how taking on such a demanding leadership role has
helped him in life, Ernie shared that it instilled in him an important "take
--- . tcharge" attitude and improved his communication skills. After spending two
years in the Army, Mr. Peeples put those skills to good use starting several
businesses. First, he bought his father's grocery store (located at the cur-
rent Hynes Discount site). When the large grocery chains moved into town, he
converted it into a clothing/shoe store. These businesses thrived for forty-one
years. He currently owns a local citrus packing company. Considering Rainas
plans on majoring in business at Florida Southern College, he will have plenty of
opportunities to follow in Mr.Peeples entrepreneur footsteps.
