The Model F1FR Series automatic sprinklers utilize a 3.0 mm frangible glass bulb. These sprinklers have demonstrat- ed response times in laboratory tests which are five to ten times faster than standard response sprinklers. This quick response enables the Model F1 FR Series sprinklers to apply water to a fire faster than standard -response sprinklers of the same temperature rating. The glass bulb consists of an accurately controlled amount of special fluid hermetically sealed inside a precisely man- ufactured glass capsule. This glass bulb is specially con- structed to provide fast thermal response. At normal temperatures, the glass bulb contains the fluid inboth the liquid and vapor phases. The -vapor phase can be seen eaasmall bubble. Asheat |sapplied, the liquid expands, forcing the bubble smaller and smaller amthe liq- uid pnamaun*inoreenes.Conbnuedhea1ingforoee1he|iqu|d to push out against the bu|b, causing the glass toshatter, opening the waterway and allowing the deflector to distrib- ute the discharging water Model F1 FIR Series sprinklers provide a wide range of op- tions where quick -response, glass bulb sprinklers are used: ° Pendent' recessed pendent, upright, horizontal aidevvaU, and vertical aideweU deflectors ° K-factorsnf2.8(40metric).4.O(57nneirio), 4.2(60 metric), and 5.8(8Umetric) ° Flush, recessed, and concealed installations See the Design and Installation Information table in this Bulletin for information onthe approvals and availability of specific Model F1FRseries sprinkler configurations. Application Model F1FR Series sprinklers are intended for use in accordance with NFPA 13' FM Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets, and the requirements nfthe Authority Hav- ing Jurisdiction. Care must boexercised that the k-factor, temperature rating, deflector style, and sprinkler type are in accordance with the requirements of the applicable design and installation standards, In addition, Model F1FRSeries sprinklers must baused inaccordance with their |io{inQo and approva|o, as well as the information provided inthis Bulletin. Installation G|mao bulb sprinklers have orange bulb protectors or pro- tective caps to minimize bulb damage during shipping, han- dling and installation. Reliable sprinkler installation wrench- es are designed to install sprinklers with bulb protectors in place, Remove the bulb protector e\the time when the sprin- kler system is placed in service for fire pn)haoiion. Removal of the bulb protector before this time may leave the bulb vul- nerable to damage. Remove bulb protectors by undoing the clasp by hand. Donot use tools kzremove bulb pnotectona. Model F1FR Series sprinklers must bainstalled with the Reliable sprinkler installation wrench identified inthe Design and Installation Information table in this Bulletin. Check the gasket to make sure it is suitable for the intended service, Verify the outside surface of pipe ends have a smooth seating surface for the gasket. Remove one bolt from the housings and loosen the remaining nut to allow the coupling to swing over. Then, install the housings over the gasket making sure the housing keys fully engage both grooves. Install the remaining bolt, and thread the nuts finger -tight onto the bolt. Note: The oval track bolt should seat properly in the bolt hole. INSPECT COMPLETED p INSTALLATION Visually inspect the bolt pads on each side to ensure metal -to -metal contact is achieved as well as the keys are fully engaged in pipe groove. 2 PLACE GASKET ON PIPE END Place the gasket over the pipe end fully so that the gasket lip does not overhang. Tighten all nuts evenly by alternating sides. IMPACT WRENCH USAGE GUIDELINES Failure to follow these instructions may cause the gasket to pinch and the product to fail, Evenly tighten bolts by alternating sides until bolt pad offsets are even, Do NOT continue using an impact wrench after the bolt pads achieve metal -to -metal contact, -PIPE A ATIAG END Align and connect the mating pipe ends together. Slide the gasket into position centering gasket between the grooves on each pipe end. Tighten the nuts completely until metal - to -metal contact occurs at the bolt pads. DUCTILE IRON THRE4DED FITTINGS Ductile Iron Threaded Fittings "Twice the strength at half the weight" Ductile Iron A brief history & overview Ductile iron-, was invented and first introduced in the United States and England in 1948.2. Cementite, a chemical compound of carbon and iron becomes molten at high temperatures and is transformed into graphite during the cooling process. In standard gray cast iron this graphite appears in the shape of flakes or lines which indicate the X!ZK<, brittle nature of grey iron. By adding magnesium to the Z 'IkA molten metal in combination with " %.-"- ferro silicon as an inoculant you Gray Iron (xIOO) can produce crystallized graphite in the shape of nodules. This nodular or ductile iron is very strong. The nodular graphite has a profound effect on the physical strength of the metal with the tensile strength increasing to a range of 65,000 - 80,000 psi, or two to three times stronger than gray cast iron. The tensile strength can be further increased to a range of 100,000 - 120,000 psi through proper heat treatment. Ductile Iron (x100) Physical Properties Comparison Soil pipe and fittings were among the first ductile iron applications due to the product strength requirements. Many automotive components also transitioned from gray and malleable iron to ductile iron, thus taking advantage of the strength and weight benefits. Further technological advances in the late 1970's along with the addition of rhenium (Re), a rare earth element, enabled the production of thin -wall castings to 1/8" or 3 mm. Over the past 60+ years ductile iron has and will continue to replace gray cast and malleable iron due to its superior properties. *1 Ductile iron is also known as nodular graphite cast iron, spheroidal graphite cast iron, DC1 or SG iron. *2 Ductile iron was invented by H. Morrogh (England) and A.P. Gagnelain & K.D. Milles ( USA) in 1948. Therefore over -tightening the fitting can damage the pipe threads and create leaks. In general ductile iron fittings require about one-half turn less than the equivalent gray cast ion fitting. (1) Pipe Threads: All pipe threads must be fabricated to ANSI B 1.20.1 NPT (or BSPT threads to ISO 7 depending on countries installed). [0 Improper threads and or depth will affect scaling. (2) Clean Threads: All threads must be clean and free of rust and debris prior to application joint sealant (tape or paste). (3) Sealant Application: Apply a moderate amount of high quality sealant (Teflon based pipe paste or Teflon tape is recommended). The sealant should be applied evenly across the full length of the pipe threads. 1Z If using Teflon tape, it ,should be applied with a minimum of three overlapping wraps along the hill lency:_1th, of the threads. Wrap the tape from left to right Z' starting at the be-innitio of the thread, (4) Make -On Fitting: Firmly tighten the fitting by hand. With the pipe firmly secured, advance the fitting two to three complete revolutions using a pipe wrench. f. If using an automatic make -on machine, please Z' note that the torclue parameters for ductile ironfittings will be different from that of gray cast and malleable iron threaded fittings, Use caution when settii)g these L_ 47 parameters prior to tighteni.1- the fittings on to male threads, In -eneral ductile iron fittings requireabout one-half turn less than the equivalent gray cast ion fitting. (5) Test and Inspection: Upon completion of installation, pressurize the system and inspect for leaks. If a leak is detected, advance the fitting to tighten and retest and inspect. Over tightening fittings niay result in Joint failure. E\/1 Do not back -off fittings during or after tightening. If necessary to remedy a leak begin again at step 2 and repeat the steps. 10 Piping systems must always be depressurized and drained before attempting to disassemble, remove or adjust any piping component. (6) Care & Maintenance: Ductile iron fittings in most applications do not require and special ongoing maintenance. Always follow generally accepted piping principles when caring for a piping system and ensure the entire system is maintained per all local codes and requirements including the most current version of NFPA Standard 25, entitled Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of a Water Based Fire Protection Systems.
