OPERATION During fire conditions, when the temperature arouexposed d the sprinkler approaches its operating temperature, the cover plate detaches, releasing the deflector. Continued heating of the sprinkler Causes the heat -sensitive liquid in the glass bulb to expand, causing the glass to shatter, releasing the pip capand sealing spring assembly. Water flowing through the sprinkler orifice Strikes the deflector, forming a uniform spray pattern ove a specific area of coverage determined by the water supply pressure at the sprinkler to extinguish or control the fire. 6. INSPECTIONS, TESTS AND MAINTENANCE Refer to NFPA 25 for Inspection, Testing and Maintenance requirements. 7. "Twice the strength at half the wei ht" Ductile Iron A brief history & overview Ductile iron*, was invented and first introduced in the United States and England in 1948-. Cementite, a chemical compound of carbon and iron becomes'molten at high temperatures and is transformed into graphite during the cooling process. In standard gray ca 't iron this graphite appears in the shape of hakes or lines which indicate the k brittle nature of grey iron. By adding magnesium to the` molten metal in combination with ferro silicon as an inoculant you Gray Iron (x1 0) can produce crystallized graphite in the shape of nodules. This nodular or ductile ron is very strong. The nodular graphite has a profound effect on the physical strength of the metal with the tensile strength increasing to a range of 65,000 - 80,000 psi, or two to three times stronger than r► gray cast iron. The tensile strength , W can be further increased to a range; of 100,000 - 120,000 psi through Ductiletroa (x 00) proper heat treatment. i Physical Properties Comparison TensilaSlrangti Yteld Str ilgt (0119 gn., ps11 mii5; psi, In„ ; !hi the iron 1 65.000 45,000 1 A5 i6 Gr, 6545-12) 1 (448 R4Pa) (310 AIPa) Gray iron 21.0(l0 (A 126 Class A) ( 145 MPa) ( Not specified I Not spcified Malleable iron 50,000 32,000 I( (A47 Gil 32510) (345 MPa) 1 (224 MPa) Soil pipe and fittings were among the first ductile iron applications due to the product strength requirements. Many automotive components also transitioned from gray and malleable iron to ductile iron, thus taking advantage of the strength and weight benefits. Further technological advances in the late 1970's along with the addition of rhenium (Re), a rare earth element, enabled the production of thin -wall castings to 1l8" or 3 mm, Over the past 60+ years ductile iron has and will continue to replace gray cast and malleable iron due to its superior properties. Therefore over -tightening the fitting can damage he pipe threads and create leaks. In general ductile iron fittings require about one-half turn less than the equival nt gray cast ion fitting. (1) Pipe Threads: All pipe threads must be fab ANSI B 1,20.1 NPT (or BSPT threads to ISO 7 on countries installed). (5) Test and Inspection: Upon completion of installation, pressurize the system and inspect for leaks. If a leak is detected, advance the fitting to tighten and retest and inspect. Over tightening fittings may result in joint failure. to RI Do not back -off fittini,s during or after tigliteninh. ng If necessary to remedy a leak begin again at step 2 and repeat the steps. 121 Improper threads and or depth will affect sealing. (2) Clean Threads: All threads must be clean jInd free of rust and debris prior to application jointsealant (tape or paste). (3) Sealant Application: Apply a moderate amount of high quality sealant (Teflon based pipe paste, o Teflon tape is recommended). The sealant should be pplied evenly across the full length of the pipe threads, M If using Teflon tape, it should be applied with a minimum of three overlapping wraps along the full length of the threads. Wrap the tape from left the right starting at the beginning of the thread. (4) Make -On Fitting: Firmly tighten the fitting b hand. With the pipe firmly secured, advance the fitrench. ng two to three complete, revolutions using a pipe if using an automatic make -on rnachinc please note that the torque parameters for ductile iron fittings will be different m m frothat of gray cast and G lleable iron threaded fittings, Use caution when sett:mg these pararricters prior to tightening the fittings on o male threads. In general ductile iron fittings requir —about one-half turn less than the equivalent gray ast ion fitting, 1'l Piping systerns must- always be depressurized and drained before attempting to disassemble, remove of adjust any piping Component. (6) Care & Maintenance: Ductile iron fittings in most applications do not require and special ongoing maintenance. Always follow generally accepted piping principles when caring for a piping system and ensure the entire system is maintained per all local codes and requirements including the most current version of NFPA Standard 25, entitled Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of a Water Based Fire Protection Systems.
