A rcceptacle outlet shall be installed wherever flexible cords with attachment plugs are used. Where flexible cords are permitted to be permanently connected, it shall be permitted to omit recep- tacles for such cords. (c) Appliance Outlets. Appliance receptacle outlets installed in a dwell- I ing unit for specific appliances, such as laundry equipment, shall be installed within 6 feet (1.83 m) of the intended location of the appliance. 210-52. Dwelling Unit Receptacle Outlets. (a) General Provisions. In every kitchen, family room, dining room, living room, parlor, library, den, sun room, bedroom, recreation room, or similar room or area of dwelling units, receptacle outlets shall be installed so that no point along the floor line in any wall space is more than 6 feet (1.83 m), measured horizontally, from an outlet in that space, including any wall space 2 feet (610 mm) or more in width and the wall space occupied by flXed panels in exterior walls, but excluding sliding panels in exterior walls. The wall space afforded by fIxed room dividers, such as freestand- ing har-type counters or railings, shall he included in the 6-foot (1.83-m) I measurement. As used in this section, a "wall space" shall be considered a wall unbro- ken along the floor line by dOOlways, fIreplaces, and similar openings. Each wall space 2 feet or more (610 mm or more) wide shall be treated individually and separately from other wall spaces within the room. A wall space shaH be permitted to include two or more walls of a room (around corners) where unbroken at the floor line. (FPN): The purpose of this requirement is to minimize the use of cords across dOOlways, fireplaces, and similar openings. Receptacle outlets shall, insofar as practicable, be spaced equal dis- tances apart. Receptacle outlets in floors shall not be counted as part of the required number of receptacle outlets unless located close to the wall. The receptacle outlets required by this section shall be in addition to any receptacle that is part of any lighting fIxture or appliance, located within cabinets or cupboards, or located over 5V2 feet (1.68 m) above the floor. Exception: Pennanently installed electric baseboard heaters equipped with factory-installed receptacle outlets or outlets provided as a separate assembly by the manufacturer shall be pennitted as the required outlet or outlets [or the wall space utilized by such pennanently installed heaters. Such receptacle outlets shall not be connected to the heater circuits. (FPN): Listed baseboard heaters include instructions that may not permit their installation below receptacle outlets, (b) Small Appliances. (1) The two or more 20-ampere small appliance branch circuits required by Section 220-4(b) shall seNe all receptacle outlets, including refrigeration equipment, in the kitchen, pantry, breakfast room, dining room, or similar area of a dwelling unit. Such circuits, whether two or more are used, shall have no other outlets. Exception No.1: A receptacle installed solely for the electrical supply to and SllppOrl of all electric clock in any of the rooms specified above. E\"ceptioll No.2: Outdoor receptacles. 70-46 NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE Exception No.3: In addition to the required receptacles specified by Section 210-52, switched receptacles supplied from a general-purpose branch circuit as defined in Section 210-70(a), Exception No.1 shall be pennitted. Exception No, 4: A receptacle sefved by a circuit supplying only motor loads. Exception No.5: Receptacles installed to provide power for electric ignition systems or clock timers for gas-fired ranges, ovens, or counter- mounted cooking ullits, (2) Receptacles installed in the kitchen to selVe counter top surfaces shall be supplied by not less than two small appliance branch circuits, either or both of which shall also be permitted to supply receptacle outlets in the kitchen and other rooms specified in Section 210-52(b )(1). Additional small appliance branch circuits shall be permitted to supply receptacle out- lets in the kitchen and other rooms specified in Section 210-52(b)(I). (c) Counter Tops. In kitchens and dining areas of dwelling units, a receptacle outlet shall he installed at each wall counter space 12 inches (305 mm) or wider. Receptacle outlets shall be installed so that no point along the wall line is more than 24 inches (610 mm), measured horizontally from a receptacle outlet in that space. A receptacle outlet shall be installed at each island or peninsular counter top with a long dimension of 24 inches (610 mm) or greater and a short dimension of 12 inches (305 mm) or greater. Receptacle outlets to selVe island or peninsular counter tops shall be installed above, or within 12 inches (305 mm) below the counter top. Receptacle outlets shall be installed so that no point along the centerline of the long dimension is more than 24 inches (610 mm), measured horizontally from a receptacle outlet in that space. A peninsular counter top is measured from the connecting edge. Counter top spaces separated by range tops, refrigerators, or sinks shall be considered as separate counter top spaces. Receptacle outlets rendered not readily accessible by appliances fastened in place or appliances occu- pying dedicated space shall not be considered as these reqUIred outlets. Receptacle outlets shall not be installed in a face-up position in the work surfaces or counter tops in a kitchen or dining area. (FPN)~ The 24-inch (61O-mm) dimension is measured along the wall line or cen- terline, and the intent is that there be a receptacle outlet for every 4 linear feet (1.2 m) or fraction thereof of counter length, (d) Bathrooms. In dwelling units, at least one wall receptacle outlet I shall be installed in the bathroom adjacent to each basin location. See Sec- tion 210-8(a)(I). (e) Outdoor Outlets. For a one-family dwelling and each unit of a two- family dwelling that is at grade level, at least one r~c cle outlet acces- sible at grade level shall be installed at the front an ack f the dwelling. Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection for Personnel. (a) Dwelling Units. (1) All 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles installed in hathrooms shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protec- tion for personnel. (2) All 125-volt, single-phase, 15- or 20-ampere receptacles installed in garages shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel. Exception No.1 to (a)(2): Receptacles that are not readily accessible. Exception No.2 to (a)(2): A single receptacle or a duplex receptacle for two appliances located within dedicated.space'for each appliance that in 1101711al use is 110t easily moved ftvl1f one place ,to another, and that is cord- and plug-connected in accordance with Section 400-7(a)(6), (a)(7), or (a)(8). Receptacles installed under exceptions to Section 210-8(a)(2) shall not be considered as meeting the requirements of Section 210-52(g). (3) All 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles installed outdoors where there is direct grade level access to the receptacles shall I have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel. (FPN): See Section 215-9 for feeder protection. For the purposes of this section, "direct grade level access" is defined as being located not more than 6 feet, 6 inches (1.98 m) above grade level and being readily accessible. (4) All 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles installed in crawl spaces at or below grade level and in unfinished basements shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for personnel. For purposes of this section, unfinished basements are defined as por- tions or areas of the basement not intended as habitable rooms and limited to storage areas, work areas, and the like. Exception No.1: A single receptacle supplied by a dedicated branch circuit that is located and identified for specific use by a cord- and plug- connected appliance, such as a refrigerator or freezer. Exception No.2: TIle laundry circuit as required by Sections 210-52(1) and 220-4(c). Exception No.3: A single receptacle supplying a pennanently installed sump pump. (5) All 125-volt, single-phase, 15- and 20-ampere receptacles to serve counter top surfaces, installed within 6 feet (1.83 m) of a wet bar sink or kitchen sink, shall have ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection for per- sonnel. (FPN): The intent of this subsection is to permit the exemption of receptacles that are located specifically for appliances such as' refrigerators and freezers from ground-fault circUlt-interrupter protection for personnel.
