Tim, Per your instructions I inspected on 8/26/94 the masonry wall damage to the above referenced facilty. We have attached sketches documenting how the repairs should be undertaken. If conditions encountered in the field are different than shown, our office should be contacted for a reinspection. We will leave the undamaged elements in position and reconstruct the damaged elements to meet current code requirements. Any cracked masonry wall areas should be filled solid by inducing a hole at the top of the cell in the cracked areas and filling the cell with concrete. If any cracked areas or other damage is encountered that is not reflected on these drawings, our office should be notified prior to proceeding. If there are any questions please let me know. The contractor is responsible for supporting the existing elements and protecting the remaining elements of the existing building. 2. The contractor is to shore and brace as required to provide and insure the lateral stability of all work. 3. The contractor is to provide saftey barriers as required to provide for the saftey of all personnel and the public saftey. DESIGN CRITERIA 1. The reconstructed area is designed in accordance with the 1991 edition of the Standard Building Code. 2. Bracing & Shoring: The structural integrity of the completed structure depends upon the interaction of various connected components. Provide adequate bracing, shoring, and other temporary supports as required to safely complete the work. 3. Concrete Design Method and Strength: U. S. D., f' c=3 000 psi @ 28 days. 4. Masonry Strength: f'm=1500 psi. The contractor is responsible for maintaining the specified prism strength. 5. The contractor is to field verify all dimensions, elevations; and layouts prior to construction. The contractor is to document any discrepancies or problems in writing to the engineer prior to construction. CONCRETE 1. STANDARDS: All concrete work shall comply with the latest edition of the following: a. ACI 318, IIBuildinq Code Requirements for Reinforced Concrete II , latest edition. b. CRSI, IIPlacinq Reinforcinq Barsll, latest edition. c. The local governing building code if more-stringent that the above. 2. MATERIALS: a. Water: Clean ahd Potable. b. Cement: ASTM C150, Type 1 c. Aggregate: ASTM C 33 d. Air Entraining Admixture: ASTM C 260 e. Water Reducing Admixture: ASTM C 494, Type A f. Calcium Chloride: Not permitted. g. Steel Reinforcing: fy=60,000 psi, ASTM A 615 h. Moisture Barrier: 6 mil, ASTM E 154 i. Cure and Seal: Clear styrene butadiene, Fed. Spec. TT-C- 800A. j. Welded Wire Mesh: ASTM A 185 k. Non Shrink Non Metallic Grout: CRD-C588 factory premixed 1. Bonding Compound: Polyvinyl acetate, rewettable type 3. MIX DESIGN: a. f'c=3000 psi @ 28 days; 480# cement/c.y. minimum; w/c ratio .55 maximum. b. Slump Limits: 1. Beams, slabs, columns, footings, piers and walls; 3"-5" 2. Masonry wall fill; 8"-10" c. Small rock mixes are not allowed for slabs or other wearing surfaces. 5. COVER: Unless otherwise shown on the drawings the minimum concrete cover for reinforcing shall be as follows: a. Footings: 3" b. Columns and pedestals: 1 1/2" for #5 and smaller. 2 " for others. c. Structural slabs exposed to weather: 1 1/2" top and 3/4" bottom. d. Slab-on-grade: 1 1/2" from top of slab. e. Beams: 1 1/2" for 3% and smaller and 2" for others, 6. SPLICES, HOOKS AND CORNERS: Unless otherwise shown on drawings: a. Reinforcing Steel: 40 bar diameters. Provide standard hooks at the ends of all column and filled cell reinforcing. Provide corner bars for all bars at all corners. 7. FORMS: Construct formwork for concrete with plywood or other acceptable panel type materials to provide continuous, straight smooth surfaces. Coat forms with a commercial formulation coating compound that will not bond, stain, or adversely affect concrete surfaces or impair subsequent treatments. Design land erect formwork to support all loads. Thoroughly clean and adjust all forms just prior to concrete placement. Use factory prefabricated snap off or removable ties. o. EXECUTION: a. Support reinforcement on metal bolsters. Masonry may not be used for supports. b. Formwork supporting concrete beams shall be left in place for at least 14 days and until the concrete has reached it's design strength. c. Consolidate concrete with mechanical vibrat-ing equipment. d. All slab surfaces are to be coated with liquid cure and seal compound unless this would affect finishes to be applied later. In the case of the latter wet cure the slab. Comply with ACI guidelines for acceptable protection and curing practices for under all conditions. e, Provide 1 1/2" keyways at all construction ~I oints . f. Formwork not supporting the weight of concrete may be removed after 24 hrs. g. Place concrete in forms in horizontal layers not exceeding 18" in depth so as to avoid inclined joints. h. Wet all forms prior to placing concrete. i. Provide moisture barrier over prepared base where indicated. j. Roughen all existing dried concrete surfaces and coat with bonding agent prior to placing wet concrete against the dry surface. k. Concrete shall not free fall more than two feet into forms. 9. FINISHES AND TOLERANCES: Unless otherwise indicated: a. Trowel finish all interior slab areas. b. Patch all formed surfaces not exposed to view. c. Patch and rub all formed surfaces exposed to view. d. Broom finish all exterior slab surfaces. e. Check ~nd level slab surfaces to a tolerance of 3/16" in 10' when checked with a 10' straightedge. Where tolerances to levelness and waviness are more stringent due to equipment requirements, those tolerances will control. Levelness shall be interpreted as flatness on sloped slabs. MASONRY 1. STANDARDS: All masonry work shall comply with the latest edition of the following: a. ACI 530, "Buildinq Code Requirements for Masonry Structures" b. ACI 530.1, "Specifications for Masonry Structures". c. NCMA, "Manual of Facts on Concrete Masonry" d. The local governing building code if more stringent than the above. 2. MATERIALS: a. Concrete Masonry Units: 8"X8"X16" (uno), ASTM C 90, Grade N, Type 1, using normal weight concrete> b. Mortar: Type M, ASTM C 270, 2500 psi for a 2 inch cube @ 28 days. 1. Steel Reinforcing: fy=60,000 psi, ASTM A 615 e. Wire Joint Reinforcing: 9 ga. side and cross rods (ladder type), Hot dipped galvanized ASTM A 153, Class B-2 coating. 3. SUBMITTALS: Submit four copies of the manufacturer's product data for each type of masonry unit, accessory, and other manufactured product, including certifications signed by the supplier and contractors indicating that each material meets the specifications. See the "Concrete" section for reinforcing and grout submittals. 4. EXECUTION a. Do not wet concrete masonry units prior to setting. b. Cut masonry unit with motor driven saw desi9ned to cut masonry units with clean edges. c. Lay masonry in running bond (uno) d. Stop work by racking back one half of masonry unit length. Do not tooth. e. Fill space between metal frames and masonry with mortar. f. Items to be embedded in hollow cores are to have a layer of metal lath placed in the joint below and have the cell filled solidly with mortar. g. Fill CMU three courses below bearing plates, lintels, beams, posts, and similar conditions. h. Do not apply building loads for at least 3 days after building walls. i. At the end of each days work cover tops of walls with waterproof sheeting. j . Metal cavity caps are to be used to block ungrouted cells. No paper or buildin9 felt is to be used. k. Prevent masonry from being stained by mortar, grout or soil. m. Lay hollow masonry units with full mortar on the horizontal and vertical face shells. Bed webs in mortar in the starting course on footings, foundations walls, and all courses of piers, columns and pilasters, and where adjacent to cells or cavities to be filled. n. Maintain 3/8" mortar joints and tool all exposed joints concave. o. Provide span rated precast lintels over all openings of more than 1'-0" without other structural supports, and provide a minimum of 8" bearing. p. Remove and replace loose, broken, stained, or mismatched units so as to match the adjoining units and wall. q. Clean exposed CMU masonry by dry brushing at the end of each days work ~nd after pointing. Comply with NCMA Tek no. 28. r. Use special shapes (j ambs, corners, headers, lintels, etc.) where required. s. Horizontal joint reinforcing is to be used at 16" o.c. with prefabricated tees and corners to be used at the appropriate conditions. (continuous thru pilaster and filled cells with a 8" lap) t. High lift grouting techniques are tc? employed as required by the code. The grout components shall not be allowed to segregate when placed.
