SILENT KNIGHT FIRE ALARM ACCESSORY Model 5295 Signal Power Expander FEATURES _i · Adds More Signal Power to Local Fire Controls · Aids Compliance with ADA Require- ments Using Existing Local Control' · UL Listed for Alarm Signal Circuits · Two Supervised Inputs · Four Style W (Class B) Signal Circuits · Highly Efficient Switching Power Supply (24 VDC at 6 Amps) · 10 to 30 Volt Activation · Fuseless Design · Compatible With Most Manufacturers' Local Controls The Model 5295 Signal Power Expander provides additional supervised circuit capacity for local fire alarm systems, This makes the Model 5295 a very cost-effective solution to meeting tough Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, The 5295 increases the signaling power available for the addi- tional sounders and the brighter strobes called for by the ADA, Meeting those requirements is easily accomplished in a retrofit or new installation, DESCRIPTION The 5295 is a 24 volt 6 amp switching type power supply housed in its own red cabinet. It contains an integral precision battery charger capable of charg- ing two 12 volt 6.5 amp hour batteries. The cabinet provides ample room for field wiring and standby batteries, ~ -3' CONNECTION TO LOCAL FIRE CONTROL The 5295 can be connected to a local fire control which utilizes polarity reversing Style W (Class B) type signal circuits operating between 9 and 32 volts DC, The local control signal circuit is connected to one of the inputs on the 5295, The local control's signal circuit end-of-line resistor is also connected across two terminals on the 5295, which provides supervision between the 5295 and local fire control. Polarized audible and/or visual indicating devices are then connected to the 5295 signal circuits using , the 4,7K ohm end-ot-Iine resistors provided. A mov- able shunt block allows selecting whether all four signal circuits on the 5295, are activated by a single input from the local control, or whether each input activates two signal circuits, Since the 5295 draws very little power trom the local control, it is possible to connect one 5295 to each signal circuit, on the local control. and still provide tull supervision ot the signal circuits all the way back to the local control. . SUPERVISION LOW AC, When a Low AC condition (102 VAC or less) is detected, the green AC POWER indicator will turn off, It Low AC is detected for longer than 6 hours, the 5295 will open the Signal 1 and Signal 2 input loops, causing the local control to go into trou- ble, These conditions will restore when AC returns to 108 V AC or higher, LOW BATTERY, When a Low Battery condition, 20.4 VDC or less, is detected, the yellow BATTERY indicator will turn on and the 5295 will open the Signal 1 and Signal 2 input loops causing the local control to fJo into trouble, These conditions will restore wi:len battery voltage returns to 22 VDC or higher, SIGNAL CIRCUIT TROUBLES, The 5295 has four Style W (Class B) signal circuits, The signal circuits are supervised against opens or shorts and will con- tinue to operate normally during ground fault condi- tions. When the movable shunt block is in the single input position, a trouble condition detected on any of the four signal circuits will cause the Signal 1 input loop to open, causing the local control to go into trou- ble, When the movable shunt block is in the dual input position, a trouble condition detected on signal cir- cuits 1 or 2 will cause the Signal 1 input to open, A trouble condition on signal circuits 3 or 4 will cause the Signal 2 input to open, When the signal circuit trouble condition is corrected, the appropriate Signal loop input will restore to normal. When the amount of light reflected onto the photodiode reaches the sensitivity setting, the smoke sampling rate increases, Three (3) successive smoke sensings above the sensitiVity setting are reaulred to sound an alarm, This design has superior protection against false alarms caused by dust. insects, RF and ambient-light. A confirmed alarm causes the normally flashing power indicator LED to light continuously and the optional alarm relay /available in "R" models) to operate, A trouble indication is automatically displayed by flashing the LED every second, This meets NFPA 72 field sensitiVity testing requirements, An Internal 85 dB horn (available in .5" models) emits a steady tone when the detector alarms and a pulsed tone when power polarity is reversed, Also available is the "55" model which chirps when the unit goes outside the approved sensitivity range for more than one day, Resetting the detector will silence chirp for one day, until unit is restored to proper senSitivity, Product Data Sensitivity, " , , . A pulsed Infrared light-emitting diode serves as the light source. and a high-speed photo-diode as the sensing element. When the amount of light reflected onto the photodiode reaches the sensitivity setting. the smoke sampling rate increases. Three (3) successive smoke sensings above the sensitivity setting are reoUlred to sound an alarm. This design has superior protection against false alarms caused by dust. insects. RF and ambient-light A confirmed alarm causes the normally flashing power indicator LED to light continuously and the optional alarm relay (available in "R" models) to operate. A trouble indication is automatically displayed by flashing the LED every second. This meets NFPA 72 field sensitivity testing requirements. An internal 85 dB horn (available in "5" models) emits a steady tone when the detector alarms and a pulsed tone whe'l power polanty is reversed. Also available is the "SS" model which chirps when the unit goes outside the approved sensitivity range for more than one day. Resetting the detector will silence chirp for one day. until unit is restored to proper sensitiVity. Product Data Sensitivity... ....................................... max ..... min ... The interchangeable sensing head and function card configuration allows great flexibility in product application. The assemblies feature a modular design that allows easy selection of the desired signaling and control'functions. The rugged mechani- cal design includes a manifold and a clear partitioned cover that directs all sampled air through the sensing chamber of the selected smoke detector. The clear partitioned cover allows viewing of the UNIOUEintegral air flow monitor which indicates the presence and direction of air flow through the sensing area of the enclosure. Additionally, the cover includes a probe port for in-place measurement of the actual air velocity using an anomometer. The air inlet filter may be visually inspected through the clear cover for dust and dirt accumulation. A solid steel conduit mounting plate features knockouts for 1/2 and 3/4 inch conduit and provides continuous grounding between con- duits. Integral inlet and exhaust sampling tubes, which are suitable for duct widths of six or more inches, are provided. OPTIONAL extension sampling tubes are available in two, four, and eight foot lengths. This product is approved for use without additional extension sampling tubes. NOTE: In some applications, the addition of an optional extension sampling tube may cause the air flow monitor to stop rotating. This is a result of the lesser air volume being sampled with the optional extension tube, mostly attributable to its smaller inside diameter. Standard features also include a local red LED alarm indicator, local functional test capability, and a continuity switch for checking the system wiring. The integral compartment accepts one electronic function card. Each'function card is provided with -barrier-type,clamping-plate, screw terminal strips to accept field wiring connections of wire sizes, 12 AWG through 18 AWG. These terminal strips are designed to prevent "looping" of wires and provide for supervision of conductors. Function cards are available in several configurations. Please refer to pages 2 and 3 for electrical specifications. APPROVALS The ESL 609 Series Air Duct Smoke Detectors are for use in commer- cial fire protective signaling systems, NFPA 71 and 72 (formerly designated as 72A, 72B, 72C and 72D), and in commercial air conditioning and ventilating systems (NFPA 90A).
