. SECTION III - SCREW SPLINE - Fabrication, Assembly & Installation
The Screw-Spline System is a fabrication and erection method that perR'1its the pre-assembly of single units
in the shop or at the job site. These units are then erected by mating the male mullion half of one unit with the
female half of the unit already installed.

Step A: Measure the opening to determine length of vertical and horizontal framing members, Allow a
minimum of W' (6.4mm) clearance at the head, sill, and both jambs to facilitate installation and provide
space for caulking. If job conditions are uncertain, or masonry openings are irregular, allow extra
clearance to accommodate construction tolerance. 5

Step B: Cut vertical members to required length (Frame Height) (See FIG. 1). At desired horizontal locations
drill the proper holes in the verticals, as shown below. (See FIG. 2).

Step C: Cut Horizontals to length (daylight opening) and apply sealant to the ends ensuring a good
seal to the Vertical member. (Glass stops should be D.L.O. + 0:' -1f1s").
.Step D: Assemble the units using two 28-856 (#12 x Wa" Pan Head Screws) at-each joint (See FIG. 3).
Be sure that each unit is fabricated with a male and female mullion half. NOTE: Every unit must have
at least one deep, vertical pocket.
NOTE: Verticals always run through, horizontals butt between.

Step E: When an entrance is required, shear block joinery must be used to attach horizontals to the
immediate door frame, (See Section IV Shear Block). The other side of the sidelite will be
fabricated for screw spline joinery as usual.
.
INSTALLATION
STEP A: Install 450-037 flashing at the sill. It should be level, shimmed up a minimum of a %" and carefully
sealed at both ends (See FIG. 4). The flashing should run the full width of the opening -W' being
interrupted only at entrances. If opening is over 24' wide a splice joint is required every 12'
(See splice joint procedure on page 8).

and head members as a backup plate to support shims at perimeter fastener locations.
.
SECTION III - SCREW SPLINE (Continued)
Step C: Apply sealant to the upstanding leg on the flashing. (See FIG. 4).
Step 0: If there is an entrance, the entrance frame and attached sidelight unit(s) should be installed first
being careful to locate it accurately in the opening. Fasten to surround through the glazing pocket
and threshold using appropriate fasteners.
Step E: Install the framing units starting at the entrance and working towards the end(s). If there is no
entrance start at one jamb then work toward the other.
Step F: The first unit should be attached to the surround at the head, sill, and jamb. (See STEP I).
The remaining units are installed by snapping together the female mullion half with the male half of
the adjacent unit. (See FIG. 7).

NOTE: MULLIONS ARE
NOT DESIGNED TO
BE UNSNAPPED AFTER
INSTALLATION.
NOTE: APPLY SEALANT TO THE ENDS OF THE HORIZONTAL
MEMBERS TO ASSURE A SEAL AT THEIR POINT OF CONTACT
WITH THE FEMALE MULLION HALF.
Step G: The last unit should be pivoted into position using the last installed mullion half as a pivot point. With
narrow units (under 4') the last two units should be snapped together and installed as a single unit.

Step H: By snapping mullion halves together as frame is
assembled, frame can be installed as one
unit. Guide horizontals over shear blocks on door
jamb and install unit into place (FIG. 8).
t.
Stept:
Insert shims as needed at head and jambs and anchor through the glass pocket. (See FIG. 6).
Fasteners should be within 6" (152mm) of mullions on each side and 24" (609mm) a.c. in between.
Countersink all screw heads. Seal fasteners at sill. (See FIG. 9).
NOTE: If heavy mullion or steel reinforcing is used, extra perimeter fasteners may be required to
handle larger loads. Consult Area Application Engineering Dept.
