The PIRANHA,. Restaurant Fire
Suppression System is an automatic, pre-
engineered, fixed. fire suppression system
designed to protect the following areas asso-
ciated with cooking equipment; ventilating
equipment including hoods, ducts. plenums,
and filters; fryers; griddles and range tops;
upright, natural charcoal. or chain-type broil-
ers; Electric. lava rock. mesquite or gas-radi-
ant char-broilers and woks.
The system is ideally suitable for use in
restaurants. hospitals, nursing homes. hotels,
schools, airports. and other similar facilities.
Use of the PIRANHA Restaurant system is
limited to interior applications only. The regu-
lated release and tank assemblies must be
mounted in an area where the air tempera-
ture will not fall below 32 OF (0 OC) or exceed
130 OF (54 oC). The system must be
designed and installed within the guidelines
of the UL Listed Design. Installation.
Recharge, and Maintenance Manual.
SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
The PIRANHA Restaurant Wet Agent Fire
Suppression system is a dual-agent, pre-
engineered. fixed. automatic fire extinguish-
ing system developed specifically for
improved fire protection of commercial
restaurant cooking appliances, exhaust
hoods and ducts.
The PIRANHA system is available in 3 sizes:
PIRANHA-7 (1.5 gallon, 7 nozzle capacity)
PIRANHA-10 (2.25 gallon. 10 nozzle
capacity)

the dual system over single wet agent sys-
tems include: (1) more robust suppression of
hostile fires in protected restaurant hazards;
(2) greater hazard area protection with less
wet agent; (3) faster flame extinguishment
and securement of hot fuels such as cooking
shortening; (4) overlapping protection of
cooking appliances from fixed nozzle spac-
ings, allowing appliances to be interchanged
freely without changing nozzles; (5) more
rapid cooling of hot fuels and appliances to
prevent reignition; (6) simplicity of design and
installation,
The addition of the water discharge signifi-
cantly aids in increasing and prolonging the
foam blanket generated by the wet chemical
agent. The longer retention of the foam blan-
ket allows the hot grease to cool well below
the auto-ignition temperature.
Patents are pending for both the new propri-
etary wet chemical agent and the dual agent
system itself,
The wa ter spray portion of the system is pro-
vided by a connection to the potable water
supply.
The system design for appliance protection
under the hood allows the nozzles to be
positioned uniformly from one end of the
appliance line to the other. Most appliances
under the hood can be protected in this over-
lapping manner, therefore, it is not necessary
to protect each appliance individually.
Appliances are free to be shifted around
001551
under the hood. The only exception to this
overlapping type coverage are upright broil-
ers. salamanders. and chain broilers.
These type appliances requires dedicated
nozzle protection.
The system is capable of automatic detection
and actuation and/or remote manual actua-
tion, Additional equipment is available for
mechanical or electrical gas line shut-off
applications.
The detection portion of the fire suppression
system allows for automatic detection by
means of specific alloy rated fusible link
detectors, which, when the temperature
exceeds the rating of the link, the link
separates, allowing the regulated release
to actuate.
A system owner's guide is available contain-
ing basic information pertaining to system
operation and maintenance. A detailed tech-
nical manual is also available including
system description, design, installation,
recharge, and maintenance procedures, plus
additional equipment installation and
resetting instructions.
The system is installed and serviced by
authorized distributors that are trained by the
manufacturer.
The basic system consists of an ANSUL
AUTO MAN regulated release assembly
which includes a regulated release mecha-
nism and a wet chemical storage tank
housed within a single enclosure. The tank
valve is designed to allow the wet chemical
agent to discharge onto the hazard area first.
Then, immediately following the agent dis-
charge. the valve will automatically allow the
water to flow through the piping and out the
system nozzles. Nozzle blow-off caps, detec-
tors, cartridges. agent, fusible links. and pul-
ley elbows are supplied in separate pack-
ages in the quantities needed for the fire
suppression system arrangement.
Additional equipment includes remote manu-
al pull station, mechanical and electrical gas
valves. pressure switches. and electrical
switches for automatic equipment and gas
line shut-off. Accessories can be added such
as warning lights. etc,. to installation where
required.
The water supply piping includes a lockable
valve.
Each tank is limited to a listed maximum
number of nozzles.
The tank includes an adaptor/tube assembly.
The adaptor is chrome-plated steel with
1/4 in. NPT female low pressure gas inlet
port and a 3/8 in. NPT female agent outlet
port. The adaptor also contains a bursting
disc seal which prevents the siphoning of
agent up the pipe during extreme tempera-
ture variations.
Connected to the adaptor/tube assembly is
the water flow valve. This valve is designed
to allow the wet chemical agent to flow first
and then the valve will automatically switch
internally to allow the water to start flowing.
thus increasing the foam blanket and
providing additional cooling.
Regulated Release Mechanism - The regu-
lated release mechanism is a spring-loaded,
mechanical/pneumatic type capable of pro-
viding the expellant gas supply to the agent
tank, It contains a factory installed regulator
deadset at150 psi (10.3 bar) with an internal
relief of approximately 190 psi (13.1 bar). It
has automatic actuation capabilities by a
fusible link detection system and remote
manual actuation by a mechanical pull
station.
COMPONENT DESCRIPTION
Wet Chemical Agent - The PRXTM extin-
guishing agent is a specially-formulated,
aqueous solution of inorganic salts designed
for rapid flame knockdown and foam secure-
ment of grease related fires. It is available in
5,0 gallon (18.9 L) plastic containers with
instructions for wet chemical handling and
usage.
Agent Tank - The agent tank is installed in
a stainless steel enclosure, The tank is deep
drawn carbon steel finished in red enamel.
Tanks are available in three (3) sizes:
PIRANHA-7: 1.5 gallon (5.7 L) capacity
PIRANHA-10: 2.25 gallon (8,5 L) capacity
PIRANHA-13: 3,0 gallon (11 A L) capacity
The tanks have a working pressure of 150
psi (10.3 bar). a test pressure of 450 psi
(31.0 bar). and a minimum burst pressure of
900 psi (62.1 bar).
The regulated release mechanism contains a
release assembly. regulator, and expellant
gas hose in a stainless steel enclosure with
cover. The enclosure contains knock-outs for
1/2 in, conduit. The cover contains an open-
ing for a visual status indicator.
The regulated release assembly also con-
tains an anti-siphon valve which is designed
to prevent back-siphonage of possible conta-
minated water into a potable water supply,
It is compatible with mechanical gas shut-off
devices; or, when equipped with a field or
factory installed switch, it is compatible with
electric gas line or appliance shut-off
devices,
Discharge Nozzles - Two types of
discharge nozzles are tested and listed with
the PIRANHA system for all applications.
One type is used for all high proximity appli-
ance and plenum protection and is stamped
MAP," and the other type is used for all duct
protection and low proximity appliance pro-
tection and is stamped "DL." Each nozzle
must have a metal or rubber blow-off cap to
keep the nozzle tip orifice free of cooking
grease build-up.
Water Shutdown Device - The water shut-
down device is an optional component which
can be field installed in the Ansul AUTO MAN
release. With the device installed. the water
flow to the discharge nozzles will automati-
cally shutdown approximately 10 minutes
after system actuation.

DESCRIPTION
The NFPA 96 Standard establishes mini-
mum construction requirements for the hood
and duct in commercial kitchen ventilating
systems. One of the requirements states
that all seams and joints shall be sealed by
a liquid-tight, continuous external weld or
listed mechanical devices providing a liquid-
tight seal.
Ansul mechanical sealing adaptors are such
a mechanical means of producing weld-like,
liquid-tight seals around pipe and conduit
penetrations when installing fire suppression
systems in hoods and ducts.
The "Quik-Seal" adaptor accepts cut pipe or
conduit with threaded ends (Figure 1). The
"Compression-Seal" adaptor is a straight
through design requiring no cutting and
threading of pipe or conduit (Figure 2).
These adaptors provide the structural
integrity and stability of a welded joint with-
out the cost or inconvenience of providing
for in-field welding, Unlike torches and
tanks, Ansul mechanical sealing adaptors
can be easily carried and install in minutes
with standard wrenches.

PERFORMANCE
When used in the PIRANHA restaurant
system, PRX Liquid Fire Suppressant is
extremely effective on fires in restaurant
ventilating equipment - hoods and ductwork,
as well as in a variety of cooking appliances
- deep-fat fryers. griddles. range tops. and
all types of broilers and char-broilers.
As the agent is sprayed in fine droplets
(atomized) onto an appliance grease fire.
it provides excellent flame knock-down, sur-
face-cooling. and fire-securing capabilities.
When the agent is applied, it initially forms a
layer of foam on the surface of the grease,
which prevents oxygen from reaching the
fuel but allows steam to escape to promote
cooling, When the subsequent water spray is
applied by the PIRANHA system, this foam
layer is continually renewed by interaction
with the water. Extremely rapid cooling
results.
Post-fire cleanup can be readily accom-
plished by flushing the area with water or
steam.
Because of the composition of PRX Liquid
Fire Suppressant. it is compatible with metals
commonly found in restaurant kitchen envi-
ronments (I.e.. stainless steel, aluminum. gal-
vanized metal, mild steel. copper and brass).

TOTAL SYSTEM
~ The PIRANHA.. system has been tested in accordance with UL
I Standard 300 and is in compliance with NFPA 96 and NFPA 17A
as a pre-engineered water assisted, wet chemical fire suppression
~ system.
The PIRANHA Restaurant Fire Suppression System is a patented,
pre-engineered, fixed, automatic fire suppression system devel-
oped specifically for improved fire protection of commercial and
institutional restaurant cooking appliances, exhaust hoods, and
ducts. When actuated, the system discharges a fixed amount of
proprietary wet chemical agent followed by water through the
~ same nozzles. Water is provided by the connection of the
PIRANHA dedicated water supply. This connection is made after
the primary domestic control valve serving the food service facility.
No other shut-off valve(s) is allowed between the primary domes-
tic control valve and the PIRANHA lockable, full flow, indicating,
~ shut-off valve,
The three sizes of systems are:
PI RAN HA-7: (7 nozzle capacity)
PIRANHA-10: (10 nozzle capacity)
PIRANHA-13: (13 nozzle capacity)
The system is designed to provide either full hood continuous
overlapping protection for a typical cooking appliance lineup or
group protection for one or more appliances under a longer hood.
The system can be pre-piped prior to the appliances being put in
~ place. Appliances protected within this manual that are eligible for
overlapping nozzle protection can be freely interchanged within
the hazard zone without changing or relocating the nozzles.
Appliances that are not eligible for overlapping protection (such as
upright broilers, chainbroilers, etc.) will require appliance specific
~ dedicated nozzle installation.
The type of system required for the particular installation will be
determined through the guidelines covered in "System Design."
Additional equipment which may be required to complete the sys-
tem design is explained in the "System Components" section.
Additional devices covered are: remote manual pull stations,
mechanical and electrical gas shut-off valves, electrical switches,
and pressure switches.
DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM
The tank assembly is filled with a proprietary wet agent under
atmospheric pressure. The system is equipped with a pneumati-
cally controlled water flow valve. The water inlet port of the valve
~ assembly is connected through the PI RANHA dedicated water
I supply to the water source downstream of the primary domestic
contr~1 valve ~~.rvicing .the food service ~acility. See "Water Supply
~ ReqUIrements In Section 5. The valve IS closed and under static
water pressure, The high pressure gas inlet port of the valve is
piped to the high pressure side of the ANSUL AUTOMAN release
mechanism and is under atmospheric pressure until the fire sup-
pression system is actuated. This high pressure line includes a
check valve to trap high pressure gas in the line when the system
is actuated. The low pressure gas inlet port on the pick-up tube
assembly is piped to the low pressure side of the gas pressure
regulator and is also under atmospheric pressure until the system
is actuated. The gas pressure regulator receives its pressure from
a gas cartridge installed in the release mechanism. The tank dis-
charge outlet on the pick-up tube assembly is connected to the
discharge piping of the agenUwater distribution system.

NOTICE
The PIRANHA system includes an atmospheric
anti-siphon vacuum breaker as an integral com-
ponent, built into the AUTOMAN Release. The
atmospheric anti-siphon vacuum breaker is
used to eliminate the possibility of creating a
vacuum. thus eliminating back siphonage of
agent into the potable water supply. The atmos-
pheric anti-siphon vacuum breaker meets the
requirements of ASSE (American Society of
Sanitation Engineers) Standard 1001. ANSI
(American National Standards Institute)
Standard A 112. 1. 1 and CSA (Canadian
Standards Association) Standard B64. Based
on backflow prevention testing by an indepen-
dent laboratory. the PIRANHA system has been
specifically listed and approved by IAPMO
(Intemational Association of Plumbing and
Mechanical Officials) in accordance with
PS10B-9B, and each PIRANHA system bears
the IAPMOIUPC logo indicating approval under
the Uniform Plumbing Code.
Underwriters'Laboratories (UL) has tested the
PIRANHA system for mechanical and fire sup-
pression performance in accordance with UL
Standard 300. UL has not evaluated the integral
anti-siphon vacuum breaker or any other back-
flow prevention device with respect to their
ability to prevent backflow from occurring.
SYSTEM OPERATION
When a fire is detected by the fire suppression system, the spring-
loaded ANSUL AUTOMAN Release assembly automatically actu-
ates to puncture the seal of the expellant gas cartridge, thereby
releasing gas under high pressure to both the high pressure inlet
of the water flow valve and the high pressure inlet of the pressure
regulator, where the high gas pressure is reduced to a lower oper-
ating pressure for the agent tank. The high pressure gas opens the
valve to the water supply by moving the internal stem assembly
toward the water inlet against the force of the spring and the stat-
ic water pressure, Once the stem assembly is unseated, the
trapped high pressure gas will hold it open until the gas pressure
is manually released after the fire event when the system is
recharged and reset. The low pressure gas from the regulator
enters the top of the tank to expel the wet agent from the tank
through the tank discharge outlet, discharge piping, and discharge
nozzles. Once the low pressure gas is flowing. the regulator will
feed the low pressure gas into the tank at a constant pressure until
the decaying pressure of the gas in the cartridge falls below the
preset outlet pressure of the regulator, at which time the gas pres-
sure from the regulator will also decay.
Although the valve was opened initially by the high gas pressure.
water will not flow into the tank until the water pressure from the
water supply overcomes the decaying gas pressure of the low
pressure gas in the top of the tank. at which time water will auto-
matically commence flowing through the tank. discharge piping,
and the discharge nozzles. Water will continue to flow until it is
manually shutoff upstream from the water flow valve after the fire
~ event is concluded or it was shut off approximately 10 minutes
I after actuation if the system has a water shutdown device installed
~ in the ANSUL AUTOMAN Release.

DETECTORS
The detector consists of three basic components: the bracket, link-
age, and fusible link. (Fusible links are not included and must be
ordered separately.) The bracket holds the entire assembly to the
mounting surface. The linkage is used to support the fusible link.
The fusible link is designed to separate at a specific temperature
and release the wire rope, thereby actuating the regulated release
mechanism.
There are two styles of detectors available: the hinged style, and
the scissor style.
The hinged style detector requires the wire rope to be strung to the
detector bracket, and then "threaded" through the linkage assem-
bly before continuing to the next detector bracket.
The scissor style allows the wire rope to be strung completely
through the detection system conduit and brackets first and the
detector linkage assemblies are installed later.
Each style of detector consists of two types of assemblies:
The Terminal Detector (Part No. 15375, or 417368) includes a
test link and is placed last in a series of detectors. This detector is
sometimes referred to as the end-of-line detector and is thus
named because it is at the point at which the wire rope "termi-
nates," or is anchored at the detector bracket. Only one terminal
detector is required per detection system.
The Series Detector (Part No. 15373, or 417369) is any detector
located in-line between the regulated release assembly and the
terminal detector,
When using Part No. 15373 and 15375 style detectors, a total of
5 detectors can be in one detection system: 4 series detectors,
Part No, 15373 and 1 terminal detector, Part No. 15375.
When using Part No. 417368 and 417369 style detectors. a total
of 15 detectors can be in one detection system: 14 series detec-
tors. Part No. 417369 and 1 terminal detector, Part No. 417368.
