This is a higher design pressure than is required in central Florida. This installation will meet F.B.C. 2003 for central Florida. Supporting data is provided and analyzed at the new design pressure of 61.5 psf for coastal regions. The Sealed Air FS, FW, and FP series panel have been tested by,,the Aeroteç Engineering Group of the Convair Division of General Dynamics CorpCorporati4n,in"a low velocity wind tunnel to a design load of 55.5 psf which equals a wind veloctyf 136 mileslper hour. 2 217. 55.5 =0.00256 V (35/30) V= 136 mph The framed series panels are attached directly to the roof structure(securely into rafters) per installation instructions by factory retaining clips tested to retain the panel at a loading of 83.5 psf, or a wind velocity of 176.7 mph. Use the factory recommended clip arrangement with Factory supplied 1/4 -20 lag screws having a minimum tensile strength of 45,000 psi, secured by 1/4" zinc plated thrust washers. To calculate the uplift force of the section of panels, use the formula: (P)x(A)x (N) Where: P=Pressure per square foot on the panel surface for the design velocity. A= The width x length of the panel. N= Number of panels mounted on the roof. Example: For the following example, the largest array of the largest collector is used to demonstrate the maximum exposure. Arrays should be limited to 11 collectors or less per bank for thermal performance reasons. All charts supplied have been calculated on the new maximum test pressure psf, and the anchorages Wprotatel toeflectifhe ` higher values. Tho4otal uplift of d I l panel section of 12'l4lectors at a wind velocrt of 136' e r: 55.5X 4x x 12 x 11 =29,304 lb. Lag bolt pull out force is calculated by the.thread strength of the lag, and the ability of wood to hold the lag in place. As the length of the lag increases the wood's ability to hold the lag increases until the tensile strength of the bolt is reached. Wood typically used in building roof structures is softwood having a specific gravity of 0.55. The lag bolt pull out force must exceed the uplift force determined above in order to keep the solar array (panel section) in place. The following pull out force is given for lag bolts in wood substrate. Forces are per inch of length imbedded in wood. 1/4" = 260lb./inch 3/8" = 390lb./mch Pull out force can be ex pressed as follows: Pf= SxL Where: Pf is the pull out force. S is the strength, or retention force of the lag in lbs. per inch(from above). L is the length of thread that is imbedded in wood. Our 11 panel system above will have 38 bolts, 1/4" x 4" securing the panel frames to the roof system and into wood joists. The bolts will run through the retaining clips, having three inches of bolt length imbedded in the wood. The pull out force is calculated as follows: 260 x 3 = 780 x 38 bolts=29,640 lb. of retention force with wood at 0.55 specific gravity. This pull out force is greater than the uplift force determined for our 11 panel array. Fewer than 11 panels may be used per collector array, since the anchorage is proportional to the number of panels in the array. Do not exceed 11 panels per array, as this will degrade performance. Pilot holes should always be drilled for lag bolts, to improve holding power. The pull out force of the thrust washer is .5 x 3.14159 x .125 x 60,000= 11,775 lb. This pull out force exceeds the retaining clip bolt strength of 2209 lb. You must use thrust washers to prevent the bolt head from pulling through the clips. Where roofing materials require the use of roof jacks to allow the array to clear the shingles or tiles, roof jacks should be made and spaced according to sheet 3 of the drawing set, and installed per the framed series installation instructions. With blocks spaced at 24" intervals, the pull out of the stringer arrangement can be expressed as above. Applying the same formula, each block has a retention capability of 3901b. x 3, or 1170 lb. The array will have an arrangement of stringers and roof jacks equal to the number of panels+ 1, multiplied by the number of stringers called for in the table located on sheet 3 of the drawing set for framed series collectors. I have included a series of worksheets that calculate the uplift forces and retention forces for an array consisting of two to 11 panels, at a design pressure of 61.5 psf This is the design pressure for coastal communities to meet the 2003 code revision. Using the recommended number of attachment points in the charts for the number of collectors in a given array will assure a wind—safe installation. FP= Sew es Unframed Panels: The same force applies to the frameless panel since the frameless panel sizes are identical in aperture to the framed series panels. Apply the straps per the charts and drawings Supplied. Follow the installation instructions for the selected Sealed Air solar collector system. This documentation is valid for the factory recommended materials and methods for installing roof mounted framed panel systems in areas with a potential for high wind conditions. All factory-supplied materials are designed to meet or exceed the above requirements.
