The building thermal envelope shall be constructed to limit air leakage in accordance with the requirements of
Sections R402.1 throgh R402.4.4.
Q R402.4.1 Buiiding thermal envelope. The building thermal envelope shall comply with Sections R402,4 1.1 and R402.4 1.2.The
sealing methods between dissimilar materials shall al(ow for differentia!expansion and cantraction.
• R402.4.1.1 installation. The components af the building thermal envelope as listed in Table R402.4 1.1 shall be installed in
accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and the criteria listed in Tahle 402.4,1 1,as applioable to the method of construction.
Where required by ihe cade afficial,an approved fhird party shall inspect a!1 camponents and veritt compliance.
• R402.4.1.2 7esting. The building or dwelling unit shall be tested and verified as having an air leakage rate of not exceeding 5 air
chatages per hour in Giimate Zonas 1 and 2,and 3 air changes per hour in C(imate Zones 3 through 8.Tesfing shal(be conducted with
a blower door at a pressure of 0.2 inches w.g.(50 Pascals}.Where required by the code official,testing shall be cpnducted by an
approved third party.A written report of the results of the test shall be signed by the party conducting the test and pravided to the code
official.Testing shall be performed at any Time after creation of a11 psnetrations of the building thermal envelope.
During testing:
1.EMerior windows and daors,fireplace and stove doors shall be closed,but noi sealed,beyod ihe intended weatherstripping or
other infi(tratian oontrol measures;
2. Dampers including exhaust,intake,makeup air,backdraft and flue dampers shall be closed,but not sealed beyond intended
infiltration catrol measures;
3.Interior doors,if insta(Ied at the time af the fest,shall be open;
4,Exterior doors for continuous ventilation systems and heat recovery ventilators shail be closed and sealed;
5.Heating and cooling systems,if insialled af Yhe time of the tesi,sha!!be turaed off;and
8,Supply and return registers,if instal(ed at the tirne of the test,shal(be ful(y open.
O R402.4,2 Fireplaces. Post-construction test:Totaleakage shail be less than or equal to 4 cfm (113 Umin)per 100 square feet(9.29 m2)of conditioned floor area
when tested at a pressure differential of 0.1 inches w.g.(25 Pa)across the entire system,including the manufacturer's air handler enclosure.Ali .
register boots shall be teped ar otherwise sealed during the tesi.
2. Rough-in test:Total leakage shall be less than or equal to 4 cfm (113 Umin)pr 100 square feet(9.29 m2)of oonditioned floor area when tested
at a pressure differentiai af 0.1 inches w.g.(25Pa)across the sysierrt,inc(uding the manufac#urer's air handler enclosure.AII registers shall be
taped or otherwise sealed during the test.If the air fiand(er is not installed at the iime ofi the test,total leakage shall be less than or equal to 3 cfm
(85 Umin)per 100 square feet(9.29 m2)of conditioned floor area.
Exceptians:
1. The total leakage test is not required for ducts and air handlers located entirely within the building envelope.
2.
