<br />INSPECTION PROCEDURES FOR SMOKE CONTROL
<br />1 SCOPE
<br />THE INSPECTION PROCEDURES DESCRIBED APPLY TO SMOKE CONTROL SYSTEMS THAT ARE DEDICATED
<br />TO CONTROLLING SMOKE IN BUILDING ATRIUM FIRES. THESE PROCEDURES ADDRESS THE MAJOR
<br />COMPONENTS OF SMOKE CONTROL SYSTEMS. THE PHRASE AS SPECIFIED IS USED TO MEAN AS
<br />SPECIFIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH CONTRACT DOCUMENTS, THE FLORIDA BUILDING, NFPA 92B SMOKE
<br />MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS IN MALLS, ATRIA AND LARGE SPACES, LATEST EDITION.
<br />2 BARRIERS
<br />a. CHECK WALLS, PARTITIONS, FLOORS, AND CEILINGS OF BARRIERS OF SMOKE CONTROL
<br />SYSTEMS FOR OBVIOUS AND UNUSUAL OPENINGS THAT COULD ADVERSELY AFFECT SMOKE CONTROL
<br />PERFORMANCE.
<br />b. CHECK THAT GAPS AROUND DOORS DO NOT EXCEED THE LIMITS SPECIFIED. IF GASKETING IS
<br />REQUIRED, CHECK THAT IT IS AS SPECIFIED.
<br />G. CHECK THAT AUTOMATIC DOOR CLOSERS IN BARRIERS OF SMOKE CONTROL SYSTEMS ARE AS
<br />SPECIFIED.
<br />3 AIR -MOVING EQUIPMENT
<br />A. CHECK DUCTS TO VERIFY THAT DUCT MATERIAL AND CONSTRUCTION ARE AS SPECIFIED,
<br />B. CHECK DUCT INSTALLATION. DUCT INSTALLATION, INCLUDING THE HANGERS, MUST NOT REDUCE
<br />THE FIRE -RESISTIVE RATING OF STRUCTURAL MEMBERS AND ASSEMBLIES. FREQUENTLY,
<br />STRUCTURAL MEMBERS AND ASSEMBLIES HAVE FIRE -PROTECTIVE COVERINGS, SUCH AS DRY WALL
<br />CONSTRUCTION OR SPRAYED -ON LAYER. CHECK THAT DUCTS ARE INSTALLED IN SUCH A MANNER
<br />THAT THESE PROTECTIVE COVERINGS ARE NOT DAMAGED. CHECK THAT CLEARANCE FROM DUCTS
<br />TO COMBUSTIBLE CONSTRUCTION IS AS SPECIFIED. IN ADDITION, CHECK THAT WHERE DUCTS PASS
<br />THROUGH WALLS, FLOORS, OR PARTITIONS, THE OPENINGS IN CONSTRUCTION AROUND THE DUCTS ARE
<br />AS SPECIFIED.
<br />C. CHECK DUCT COVERINGS AND LININGS TO VERIFY THAT THEIR FIRE SAFETY REQUIREMENTS ARE
<br />AS SPECIFIED. CHECK THAT DUCT COVERINGS DO NOT CONCEAL ANY SERVICE OPENING.
<br />D. CHECK DIRECT ACCESS AND INSPECTION PROVISIONS. SERVICE OPENINGS AND TELESCOPING OR
<br />REMOVABLE DUCT SECTIONS ARE USED FOR DIRECT ACCESS AND INSPECTION. CHECK THAT A
<br />SERVICE OPENING ACCESS DOOR IS PROVIDED IN DUCTS AS SPECIFIED ADJACENT TO FIRE
<br />DAMPERS, SMOKE DAMPERS, AND SMOKE DETECTORS, CHECK THAT THESE ACCESS OPENINGS
<br />ARE IDENTIFIED WITH LETTERS AS SPECIFIED. CHECK THAT SERVICE OPENINGS ARE PROVIDED IN
<br />HORIZONTAL DUCTS AND PLENUMS WHERE SPECIFIED.
<br />E. CHECK AIR FILTERS TO VERIFY THAT THEY HAVE THE CLASSIFICATION SPECIFIED.
<br />F. CHECK THAT THE LOCATION, FIRE PROTECTION RATING, AND INSTALLATION OF FIRE, CEILING, AND
<br />SMOKE DAMPERS ARE AS SPECIFIED. GENERALLY, FIRE, CEILING, AND SMOKE DAMPERS SHOULD
<br />BE INSTALLED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF THEIR LISTING AND THE
<br />MANUFACTURER'S INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS THAT ARE SUPPLIED WITH THE DAMPER.
<br />FURTHER CHECK INSTALLATION BY REMOVING THE FUSIBLE LINK (WHERE APPLICABLE) AND
<br />OPERATE THE DAMPER TO VERIFY THAT IT FULLY CLOSES. IT IS DESIRABLE TO OPERATE DAMPERS
<br />WITH NORMAL AIR FLOW TO ENSURE THAT THEY ARE NOT HELD OPEN BY THE AIRSTREAM.
<br />REMEMBER TO REINSTALL ALL FUSIBLE LINKS THAT HAVE BEEN REMOVED DURING INSPECTION.
<br />4 CONTROLS
<br />a. CHECK MANUAL CONTROLS. CHECK THAT DEVICES FOR MANUAL ACTIVATION AND DEACTIVATION
<br />OF THE SMOKE CONTROL SYSTEM ARE OF MATERIALS AND INSTALLATION AS SPECIFIED.
<br />b. CHECK AUTOMATIC CONTROLS. CHECK THAT DEVICES FOR AUTOMATIC ACTIVATION AND
<br />DEACTIVATION AND CONTROL OF THE SMOKE CONTROL SYSTEM ARE OF MATERIALS AND
<br />INSTALLATION AS SPECIFIED.
<br />PROCEDURES FOR SMOKE -CONTROL SYSTEM TESTING
<br />1. BEFORE TESTING SMOKE -CONTROL SYSTEMS, VERIFY THAT CONSTRUCTION IS COMPLETE AND VERIFY HE
<br />INTEGRITY OF EACH SMOKE -CONTROL ZONE BOUNDARY. VERIFY THAT WINDOWS AND DOORS ARE
<br />CLOSED AND THAT APPLICABLE SAFING, GASKET, AND SEALANTS ARE INSTALLED. REPORT DEFICIENCIES
<br />AND POSTPONE TESTING UNTIL AFTER THE REPORTED DEFICIENCIES ARE CORRECTED. REFERTO
<br />INSPECTION PROCEDURES FOR SMOKE CONTROL.
<br />2. MEASURE AND RECORD WIND SPEED AND DIRECTION, OUTSIDE -AIR TEMPERATURE, AND RELATIVE
<br />HUMIDITY ON EACH TEST DAY.
<br />3. MEASURE, ADJUST, AND RECORD AIRFLOW OF EACH SMOKE -CONTROL FAN WITH ALL FANS THAT ARE A PART
<br />OF THE SYSTEM OPERATING AS INTENDED BY THE DESIGN.
<br />4. MEASURE, ADJUST, AND RECORD THE AIRFLOW OF EACH FAN. FOR DUCTED SYSTEMS, MEASURE THE FAN
<br />AIRFLOW BY DUCT PITOT-TUBE TRAVERSE.
<br />5. MEASURE AND RECORD THE AIR FLOW VELOCITY THROUGH THE ATRIUM OUTSIDE DOORS.
<br />6. AFTER AIR BALANCING IS COMPLETE, PERFORM THE FOLLOWING PRESSURIZATION TESTING:
<br />a. VERIFY THE BOUNDARIES OF SMOKE -CONTROL ATRIUM ZONE.
<br />b. WITH THE HVAC SYSTEMS IN THEIR NORMAL MODE OF OPERATION AND SMOKE CONTROL NOT
<br />OPERATING, MEASURE AND RECORD THE PRESSURE DIFFERENCE ACROSS EACH SMOKE -CONTROL
<br />ARE OF THE ATRIUM. MAKE MEASUREMENTS AFTER CLOSING DOORS THAT SEPARATE THE AREAS.
<br />MAKE ONE MEASUREMENT ACROSS EACH DOOR. CLEARLY INDICATE THE HIGH AND LOW
<br />PRESSURE SIDE OF EACH DOOR.
<br />C. WITH THE SYSTEM OPERATING IN THE SMOKE -CONTROL MODE PERFORM THE FOLLOWING:
<br />1. MEASURE AND RECORD THE PRESSURE DIFFERENCE ACROSS EACH DOOR THAT SEPARATES THE
<br />SMOKE AREA FROM ADJACENT AREAS. MAKE MEASUREMENTS WITH DOORS THAT SEPARATE THE
<br />ATRIUM SMOKE ZONE FROM THE OTHER AREAS CLOSED. CLEARLY INDICATE THE HIGH AND LOW
<br />PRESSURE SIDE OF THE DOOR. DOORS THAT HAVE A TENDENCY TO OPEN SLIGHTLY DUE TO THE
<br />PRESSURE DIFFERENCE SHOULD HAVE ONE PRESSURE MEASUREMENT MADE WHILE HELD CLOSED
<br />AND ANOTHER MEASUREMENT MADE WITH THE DOOR OPEN.
<br />2. THE ATRIUM AREA PRESSURE SHOULD BE LOWER (NEGATIVE) WITH RESPECT TO EACH DOOR ON THE
<br />SMOKE AREA BOUNDARY.
<br />7. OPERATIONAL TESTS:
<br />a. CHECK THE PROPER ACTIVATION OF ATRIUM SMOKE -CONTROL SYSTEM IN RESPONSE TO ALL MEANS OF
<br />ACTIVATION, BOTH AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL.
<br />b. CHECK AND RECORD THE PROPER OPERATION OF FANS, DAMPERS, AND RELATED EQUIPMENT AS
<br />OUTLINED BELOW FOR THE ATRIUM SMOKE -CONTROL SYSTEM.
<br />1. SMOKE -CONTROL SYSTEM AUTOMATIC ACTIVATION.
<br />2. TYPE OF SIGNAL THAT ACTIVATES A SMOKE -CONTROL SYSTEM I.E. SMOKE DETECTOR.
<br />3. FANS "ON" AS REQUIRED TO IMPLEMENT THE SMOKE -CONTROL SYSTEM.
<br />4. FAN(S) "OFF" AS REQUIRED TO IMPLEMENT THE SMOKE CONTROL SYSTEM.
<br />5. DAMPERS "OPEN" WHERE MAXIMUM AIRFLOW MUST BE ACHIEVED.
<br />6. DAMPER(S) "CLOSED" WHERE NO AIRFLOW SHOULD TAKE PLACE,
<br />7. AUXILIARY FUNCTIONS TO ACHIEVE THE SMOKE -CONTROL SYSTEM CONFIGURATION SUCH AS
<br />CHANGES OR OVERRIDE OF NORMAL OPERATING PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE -CONTROL SET
<br />POINTS.
<br />8. IF STANDBY POWER IS PROVIDED FOR THE SMOKE -CONTROL SYSTEM, TEST TO VERIFY THAT THE
<br />SYSTEM FUNCTIONS WHILE OPERATING UNDER BOTH NORMAL AND STANDBY POWER.
<br />9. CONDUCT ADDITIONAL TEST REQUIRED BY AUTHORITIES HAVING JURISDICTION. UNLESS REQUIRED
<br />BY AUTHORITIES HAVING JURISDICTION, PERFORM TESTING WITHOUT THE USE OF MOKE OR
<br />PRODUCTS THAT SIMULATE SMOKE.
<br />10. PREPARE A COMPLETE REPORT OF OBSERVATIONS, MEASUREMENTS, AND DEFICIENCIES.
<br />SMOKE SYSTEM CONTROL VERIFICATION
<br />1. CHECK FREE TRAVEL AND PROPER OPERATION OF CONTROL DEVICES SUCH AS DAMPER OPERATORS.
<br />2. CHECK THE SEQUENCE OF OPERATION OF CONTROL DEVICES. NOTE AIR PRESSURES AND DEVICE
<br />OSITIONS AND CORRELATE WITH AIRFLOW MEASUREMENTS. NOTE THE SPEED OF RESPONSE TO INPUT
<br />HANGES.
<br />3. CHECK THE INTERACTION OF ELECTRICALLY OPERATED SWITCH TRANSDUCERS.
<br />4. CHECK THE INTERACTION OF INTERLOCK AND LOCKOUT SYSTEMS,
<br />5. RECORD VOLTAGES OF POWER SUPPLY AND CONTROLLER OUTPUT. DETERMINE WHETHER THE SYSTEM
<br />OPERATES ON A GROUNDED OR NONGROUNDED POWER SUPPLY.
<br />6. NOTE OPERATION OF ELECTRIC ACTUATORS USING SPRING RETURN FOR PROPER FAIL-SAFE OPERATIONS.

<br />INSPECTIONS
<br />2 FINAL INSPECTION
<br />a. AFTER INITIAL INSPECTION IS COMPLETE AND CHECKS VERIFIES THAT TESTING AND
<br />BALANCING ARE COMPLETE AND ACCURATELY DOCUMENTED IN THE FINAL REPORT,
<br />REQUEST THAT A FINAL INSPECTION BE MADE BY THE OWNER.
<br />b. SMOKE TESTING FIRM TEST AND BALANCE ENGINEER SHALL CONDUCT THE INSPECTION
<br />IN THE PRESENCE OF THE OWNER AND THE ARCHITECT AND CODE OFFICIALS.
<br />C. SMOKE TESTING FIRM SHALL RECHECK ALL MEASUREMENTS AND MAKE
<br />ADJUSTMENTS. REVISE THE FINAL REPORT AND BALANCING DEVICE SETTINGS TO
