Previous versions of
the IBC and FBC required testing to comply with ASTM D1761 Test Method for Mechanical Fasteners in Wood. Both
methods determine a connector's allowable load as the lowest of the following:
1. Lowest ultimate of three tests (or average of 6) with a safety factor of 3
2. Average load at 118-inch deflection
3. -Calculations per American Wood Council National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS
The primary changes in ASTM D7147 are requirements to measure properties of the tested materials, such as steel
strength, fastener strength, and wood specific gravity. The tested ultimate loads must be adjusted when tested
material properties exceed the specified properties.
ICC Evaluation Services (ICE -ES) revised AC13 Acceptance Criteria for Joist Hangers and Similar Devices in
October 2016 to incorporate a methodology to evaluate products to the 20151-Codes. Simpson Strong -Tie is working
on re-evaluating wood construction connector loads to the new standard to update our product evaluation reports to
the 2015 I -Codes. As soon as the updated evaluation reports are completed, we will apply for Florida Product
Approvals.
However, reevaluating a large number of products will take time. While manufacturers work with product certification
agencies to update their wood connector evaluation reports, we recommend that building departments under the
2015 I -Codes and 2017 Florida Codes continue to accept code reports showing compliance to the 2012 and 2014
editions, respectively; until July 2018.
The information in this letter is valid until 8/300018 when it will be re-evaluated by Simpson Strong -Tie- Please visit
www,stronatio.com for additional pertinent information.
