<br /> <br />Tools you need: <br />· 2 Step ladders . Saw <br />· Tape measure . Hammer <br />· Screw driver · 16d common nails <br />· (2) 1"x4"x30" lumber for temporary slats <br />· Lumber as needed for frame and ceiling reinforcement <br />· 1/4" or 318" plywood shims, and braces, same <br />dimensions as joists <br />· Assistant <br /> <br />Notice: <br /> <br />A} Failure to follow instructions and safety precautions as <br />stated in this instruction sheet can result in serious <br />damage and injuries. <br /> <br />B) Make sure you have purchased the right size Folding <br />Stairway by measuring the ceiling height and unit width. <br /> <br />C} Consult a qualified professional if in doubt while you are <br />working on the ceiling. <br /> <br />D) Installation of this unit will require two people. <br /> <br />E} Do not stand under or use this unit during installation. <br /> <br />F) Carefully read SAFETY and CAUTION labels and follow <br />them prior to installation and every time unit is used. <br /> <br />G) Springs are under tension. Extreme care should be taken <br />in their adjustment. <br /> <br />Steps: <br /> <br />1. Select an area with sufficient landing space and <br />headroom as you climb into attic area. See FIGURE 1. <br /> <br />2. Inspect ceiling for plumbing, electrical wiring or any <br />other work that might be disturbed by cutting into <br />ceiling. (Consult a qualified professional if in doubt.) <br /> <br />3. Using dimensions from TABLE 1, below, for rough open- <br />ing cut into ceiling and create a frame using same size <br />lumber as ceiling joists. The frame should be secured to <br />the joists using 1&1 common nails and if possible steel <br />corner bracing. Should the spacing of the joists be <br />smaller than unit width, cut out a portion of the joist and <br />create the frame as shown in FIGURE 2. <br />4. Nail 1X4 temporary slats across the bo~om of rough <br />opening creating a 314" ledge on each side.
