<br />......1"''"I.~ *,,_, <br /> <br />1708 ROOF AND CEILING FRAMING <br />1708.1 Ceiling Joist and Rafter Framing <br />1708.1.1 Maximum spans for ceiling joists and rafters shall be in accordance <br />with the NFoPA Span Tables for Joist~ and Rafters, or may be designed <br />in accordance with 1701.2 or 1701.3.1. <br />1708.1.2 Where rafters meet to form a ridge, they shall be placed directly <br />opposite each other and nailed to a ridge board not less than I inch (25 <br />mm) thick, and not less in depth than the cut end of rafters. <br />1708.1.3 Ceilings joists and rafters shall be nailed to each other where possible <br />and the assembly shall be nailed to the top wall plate in an adequate manner <br />to secure the roof framing to the walls. <br />1708.1.4 Ceiling joists shall be continuous or securely joined where they <br />meet over interior partitions to provide a continuous tie across the building. <br />1708.1.5 Where ceiling joists are not parallel to rafters, sub-flooring or metal <br />straps attached to the ends of the rafters shall be installed in a manner to <br />I provide a continuous tie across the building. Where ceiling joists are not <br />i <br />i provided at the top of the rafter support walls, the ridge formed by these <br />'1 rafters shall also be supported by a beam conforming to 1706.2. <br />1708.1.6 Valley and hip rafters shall be 2 inches deeper than the jack rafters. <br />1708.1.7 Collar beams of Ix6 boards shall be installed in the upper third <br />of the roof height to every third pair of rafters. <br />1708.1.8 Notches on the ends of joists shall not exceed one-fourth the depth. <br />Holes bored for pipes or cable shall not be within 2 inches (51 mm) of <br />the top or bottom of the joist and the diameter of any such hole shall not <br />exceed one-third the depth of the joist. Notches for pipes in the top or bottom <br />of joists shall not exceed one-sixth the depth and shall not be located in <br />the middle one-third of the span. <br />i 1708.1.9 Where ends of rafters are not nailed to ridge boards, band J' oists, <br />i <br />i or similar framing members the ends of the rafters shall be supported laterally <br />I by solid blocking or diagonal bracing. <br />
