Maximum loads: Roof dead load of 20 psf and live load of 20 psf, floor dead load of 10 psf and live load of 40 psf, and wall dead load of 11 psf. S2308.4 Post and beam framing S2308.4.1 Where post and beam framing is used in lieu of stud and joist construction, the posts shall be located to support the beams above and shall be designed in accordance with S2301.2 or S2301.3.1. S2308.4.2 Intermediate framing shall be attached to the posts and braced in the manner specified in S2306.2. S2308.5 Interior bearing partitions S2308.5.1 The provisions of S2308.1.1, S2308.1.2, S2308.1.3 and S2308.1.4 shall apply to interior bearing partitions supporting more than a ceiling under an attic with no storage. S2308.5.2 Studs supporting a ceiling under an attic with no storage shall be installed with the wide face perpendicular to the partition and spaced not more than 24 inches (610 mm) o.c. S2308.5.3 Headers shall be provided over each opening in interior bearing partitions as required in S2308.3. The spans in Table 2308.5 may be used for one- and two-family dwellings. Wall studs shall support the ends of the header in accordance with Table 2308.5. S2308.5.4 Studs shall be capped with double top plates installed to provide overlapping at corners and at intersections with exterior walls. End joints in double top plates shall be offset at least 24 inches (610 mm). For platform frame construction, studs shall rest on a single bottom plate. EXCEPTION: A single top plate may be installed in accordance with S2308.1.5. S2308.6 Interior nonbearing partitions S2308.6.1 Framing for nonbearing partitions shall be of adequate size and spacing to support the finish applied thereto in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. In nonbearing walls and partitions, studs may be spaced not more than 28 inch (711 mm) o.c. and may be set with the long dimension parallel to the wall. S2308.6.2 Openings in the nonbearing partitions may be framed with single studs and headers. S2308.7 Cutting, notching and bored holes S2308.7.1 In exterior walls and bearing partitions, any wood stud may be cut or notched to a depth not exceeding 25% of its width. Cutting or notching of studs to a depth not greater than 40% of the width of the stud is permitted in nonbearing partitions supporting no loads other than the weight of the partition.
