<br />1. Spans are given in feet and inches (ft-in). <br /> <br />2. Tabulated values assume #2 Grade lumber. <br /> <br />3. Building width is measured perpendicular to the ridge. For widths <br />between those shown, spans may be interpolated. <br /> <br />4. Maximum loads: Roof dead load of 20 psf and live load of 20 psf, <br />floor dead load of 10 psf and live load of 40 psf, and wall dead load <br />of 11 psf. <br /> <br />S2308.4 Post and beam framing <br /> <br />S2308.4.1 Where post and beam framing is used in lieu of stud and joist <br />construction, the posts shall be located to support the beams above and <br />shall be designed in accordance with S2301.2 or S2301.3.1. <br /> <br />S2308.4.2 Intermediate framing shall be attached to the posts and braced <br />in the manner specified in S2306.2. <br /> <br />S2308.5 Interior bearing partitions <br /> <br />S2308.5.1 The provisions of S2308.1.1, S2308.1.2, S2308.1.3 and <br />S2308.1.4 shall apply to interior bearing partitions supporting more than <br />a ceiling under an attic with no storage. <br /> <br />S2308.5.2 Studs supporting a ceiling under an attic with no storage <br />shall be installed with the wide face perpendicular to the partition and <br />spaced not more than 24 inches (610 mm) o.c. <br /> <br />S2308.5.3 Headers shall be provided over each opening in interior <br />bearing partitions as required in S2308.3. The spans in Table 2308.5 may <br />be used for one- and two-family dwellings. Wall studs shall support the <br />ends of the header in accordance with Table 2308.5. <br /> <br />S2308.5.4 Studs shall be capped with double top plates installed to <br />provide overlapping at corners and at intersections with exterior walls. <br />End joints in double top plates shall be offset at least 24 inches (610 <br />mm). For platform frame construction, studs shall rest on a single <br />bottom plate. <br /> <br />EXCEPTION: A single top plate may be installed in accordance with <br />S2308.1.5. <br /> <br />S2308.6 Interior nonbearing partitions <br /> <br />S2308.6.1 Framing for nonbearing partitions shall be of adequate size <br />and spacing to support the finish applied thereto in accordance with the <br />manufacturer's recommendations. In nonbearing walls and partitions, <br />studs may be spaced not more than 28 inch (711 mm) o.c. and may be set <br />with the long dimension parallel to the wall. <br /> <br />S2308.6.2 Openings in the nonbearing partitions may be framed with <br />single studs and headers. <br /> <br />S2308.7 Cutting, notching and bored holes <br /> <br />S2308.7.1 In exterior walls and bearing partitions, any wood stud may be <br />cut or notched to a depth not exceeding 25% of its width. Cutting or <br />notching of studs to a depth not greater than 40% of the width of the <br />stud is permitted in nonbearing partitions supporting no loads other than <br />the weight of the partition. <br />
