STRUCTURAL SOLUTIONS, P.A. Project Amarr Garage Doors - No.: 2K -014
5508 -B West Friendly Avenue, Suite 103 Location Winston - Salem, NC
Greensboro, North Carolina 27410
(336) 856 -2686 Date 9/11/00 Sheet 1 of 1
From Thomas L. Shelmerdine, PE
Comparison of 16'x7', 16'x7' -6" and 16'x8' doors
The 16'x7' door is the size used in the tests. These calculations show that the 16'x7' -6" and 16'x8' doors
of similar construction are structurally adequate.
The components that are different are tabulated below.
ITEM 16'x7' 16'x7' -6" I 16'x8'
Number of Sections 4 5 5
Section Size 4 @ 21" each 5 @ 18" each 2 @ 21 ", 3 @ 18"
Number of Struts 8 10 10
Number of Rollers 5 6 6
Number of Jamb Brackets 4 5 5
Number of Hinges 3 per Stile 4 per Stile 4 per Stile
Surface Area 112 sq. ft. 120 sq. ft. 128 sq. ft.
Test Pressure "X" psf Less Than "X" Less Than "X"
The design pressures and test pressures for "Components" as defined in the Building Code vary with the
surface area of the item under investigation. The larger the area, the lower the pressure. Therefore, the
required test pressures for the 16'x7' -6" and 16'x8' doors are Tess than the tested door.
The size of each section in the 16'x7' -6" and 16'x8' doors are identical to or smaller than the sections in the
16'x7' door. Therefore, each section of the 16'x7' -6" and 16'x8' doors are required to resist less Toad than
the tested door.
Each of the four sections has two reinforcing struts on the 16'x7' door. The 16'x7' -6" and 16'x8' doors have
two struts on each of five sections. Therefore there are two more struts on the 16'x7' -6" and 16'x8' doors.
The resulting tributary areas per strut on the 16'x7' -6" and 16'x8' doors are equal to or less than the tributary
area per strut on the 16'x7' door. Therefore, each strut on the 16'x7' -6" and 16'x8' doors is required to resist
Tess Toad.
This comparison of tributary area also applies to the rollers, hinges and jamb brackets.
CONCLUSION , wit ofii s
Each element of the 16'x7' -6" and 16'x8' doors is required to resist less pressuq r s,eSileke l fbe
16x7' door. Therefore, the 16'x7' -6" and 16'x8' doors are structurally adequate , - lila. -,n$901:4,;•.'
t.
7
Yid b'.
2
