SECTION 213 - IRRIGATION SYSTEM
<br />PART 1- GENERAL
<br />1. DESCRIPTION OF WORK
<br />A. Work me u e : ie Section is part of the entire eat of contract documents
<br />and shall be coordinated with the applicable provisione of the other parts.
<br />B. The extent of landecape irrigation system is shown on the drawings. Completion of
<br />this work ehall mean full and exact compliance and conformity with the provisions
<br />expreeeed or implied in the drawings, echedulee and epecificatione. Irrigation
<br />installer it not relieved of hie responsibility to provide proper irrigation coverage by
<br />providing full and exact compliance with the drawinge and epecificatione. If field
<br />conditions or other unforeeeen factore warrant that design modifications are
<br />neceeeary, irrigation installer shall notify Landscape Architect immediately.
<br />C. The work under this section includes furnishing and installing materials to conetruct
<br />an automatic irrigation eyetem and maintaining that eyetem until final completion
<br />and acceptance, but not fare than 30 days from date of installation, and any other
<br />work as called for on the plane and in these epecificatione.
<br />2. RELATED WORK
<br />A. Electrical service to pump and controller shall be provided by othere under separate
<br />contract with Owner, in compliance with N.E.C. requirements.
<br />13. Site work (rough grading).
<br />C. Landscaping (see landecape epecificatione).
<br />3. QUALITY A55URANCE
<br />A. Landscape irrigation eyetem installation shall only be performed by a firm that ie
<br />regularly engaged full time in the installation of underground landecape irrigation
<br />eyeteme. (Crewe shall be controlled and directed by a foreman who ie thoroughly
<br />familiar with the type of materials being installed and the manufacturer's
<br />recommended methods of installation, and ie well vereed in reading blueprints.)
<br />B. Design modifications may be made only ae neceeeary to meet field conditions and
<br />only ae acceptable to Landecape Architect. Piping shown on plane is
<br />diagrammatically routed for clarity - route to avoid conflict with specimen plants
<br />and adjuet ae neceeeary to accommodate landscape construction.
<br />C. Contractor shall be responsible for verification at the rite of all conditions and
<br />dimensions shown on the plans prior to commencement of work.
<br />D. CODES AND STANDARDS: Work shall comply with the American Society for
<br />Testing and Materiale (ASTM) and National Electrical Code.
<br />E. REQUIREMENTS OF REGULATORY AGENCIES: Work shall comply with
<br />coder, ordinances, and regulations of all governing authorities
<br />F. WATER TESTING: Contractor shall tart the salt content (chlorides and t.d.e) of
<br />the irrigation well.
<br />4. PRODUCT HANDLING: The Contractor shall protect all materials and work against
<br />injury from any cauee and shall provide and maintain all neceeeary eafeguarde for the
<br />protection of the public. He shall be liable for any damage or injury to person or
<br />property which may occur ae a result of hie negligence in the prosecution of the work.
<br />5. JOB CONDITIONS
<br />A. EXISTING CONDITIONS
<br />1. Inspection: Contractor must examine the areas and conditione under which
<br />landscape irrigation ryrtem is to be inetalled and notify the Landecape Architect
<br />in writing of conditione detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the
<br />work. Do not proceed with the work until uneatiefactory conditione have been
<br />corrected. Contractor shall fully acquaint himeelf with related planting,
<br />electrical, paving, rite and utilities work to preclude any mirunderetanding and to
<br />facilitate a trouble -free installation at the site.
<br />2. Should any objectionable materials such as old concrete, bricke or other debris
<br />be encountered during the installation operation, they shall be removed from the
<br />rite by the Contractor.
<br />B. SCHEDULING
<br />1. Crorringe under paved areae as indicated, shall be installed by the Contractor.
<br />Croeeingr shall be inetalled prior to compaction of eubgrade.
<br />2. Irrigation installation shall not begin until rough grades have been established.
<br />3. Contractor shall be responsible for coordinating hie work with all other partiee
<br />involved with the job, and shall coordinate the supply of electrical power to the
<br />timing device (controller).
<br />4. Upon substantial completion of work, the Contractor shall request a
<br />walk- through by the Landecape Architect to formulate a "punch liet ".
<br />Contractor shall complete "punch liet" iteme ar quickly ae poeeible, and
<br />request another walk- through to verify completion. Upon rucceerful
<br />completion of the "punch lint" items, the work will be accepted by the Owner.
<br />C. The contractor ie responsible for hie own bathroom and drinking facilities.
<br />6 UTILITIES
<br />A. Prior to excavation, verify in the field the location and depth of all new and existing
<br />utilitiee and take proper precautione not to damage or disturb ouch utilities.
<br />B. Repair to original condition, new and existing utilitiee and other work damaged by
<br />Contractor's construction.
<br />C. In the care of damages to the irrigation eyetem caueed by others, the tort of
<br />repairing the work shall be paid by the party causing raid damage.
<br />7. SUBMITTALS
<br />A. After completion of piping installation, Contractor shall furnish the Owner's
<br />representative a reproducible "as built" drawing ehowing all sprinkler heady,
<br />valves, and pipelines to reasonable scale, and provide a minimum of two
<br />dimensions taken from fixed obvious objects to each automatic control valve, and
<br />quick coupling valve. The Contractor shall also furnish a drawing showing a
<br />graphic representation of sprinkler zones.
<br />D. Instruction sheets and party liete covering all operating equipment shall be bound
<br />into a folder and furnished to the Owner's representative or Landecape Architect in
<br />two (2) copiee. The Owner reeervee the right to withhold 10% of the contract
<br />amount until the "ar, built" drawinge and instructions and party lists foldere are
<br />received.
<br />8. GUARANTEE
<br />A. Guarantee workmanehip for a period of one year after date of final acceptance. In
<br />addition, see to the fulfillment of all manufacturer's warranties.
<br />E5, The Contractor shall provide the Owner with a written guarantee stating everything
<br />to be covered and any special conditions involved.
<br />PART 2 - PRODUCTS
<br />MATERIALS: Materials and equipment shall be new and shall operate at the
<br />manufacturer's publiehed capacities.
<br />1. PIPE: Comply with the following unlese otherwise indicated: All PVC pipe ahall be
<br />160 PSI, Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC 1120) A5TM- 02241, Type 1, NSF approved.
<br />2. CR055ING5: Comply with the following: All crossings under paved areas for water
<br />and conduit liner shall be Schedule 40 PVC, A5TM- 01785.
<br />3. PIPE FITTINGS: Comply with the following: For PVC plastic pipe, A5TM -02465
<br />socket fittings with A9TM -A2564 solvent cement.
<br />4. SPRINKLER HEADS: Sprinkler heade shall be of the type shown on the drawings.
<br />Filter rcreenr shall be included with all spray heads.
<br />5. RISERS AND SWING JOINTS:
<br />A. Rieere and owing joints shall be ae detailed on the drawinge.
<br />13. Risen for shrub heady rhall be Schedule 80 PVC pipe
<br />C. PVC Flex connectione: Shall be Rain Bird 5PX -100 tubing with Rain 3ird 53 series
<br />Spiral Barb Elbows. 22" minimum length of tubing shall be utilized for each
<br />connection.
<br />6. REMOTE CONTROL VALVES: Valves shall be ae specified on the clrawingr, l �
<br />Teflon tape only on threaded connectione.
<br />7. VALVE BOXES: lrolation valve boxer shall be NOS 3123C; zone valve boxes rhaii be
<br />N05 31413C. Install flush with finish grade as indicated on drawing.
<br />8. CONTROL WIRING: All wiring to automatic circuit valver shall be OF -14 direct burial
<br />wire of a different color than the black and white wirer, used on the 115 volt A.C. power.
<br />Wiring from the controller to the valvee shall be inetalled in came trench ar the
<br />mainline where poerible. All eplicee shall be made with Rain Dird Splice -1 connectors,
<br />or approved equal. All wire shall be furnished in minimum 2,500' reele and Spliced only
<br />at valve or tee locations.
<br />9. CONTROLLER: Controller shall be ar specified on the drawinge and in3talled per
<br />manufaturee recommendations.
<br />PART 3 - EXECUTION
<br />1. GENERAL: The Contractor shall be responsible for full and complete coverage of all
<br />irrigated areae and shall make any neceeeary adjuetmente, at no additional tort to the
<br />Owner.
<br />2. INSTALLATION
<br />A. EXCAVATING AND TRENCHING:
<br />1. Perform all excavatione ae required for the installation of the work included
<br />under thie section, including shoring of earth banke to prevent cave -ine.
<br />Restore all surfacer, existing underground inrtallationr, etc., damaged or cut as
<br />a result of the excavatione to their original conditione.
<br />2. Trenches shall be made wide enough to allow a minimum of 2 hither, between
<br />parallel pipe liner. The minimum vertical clearance between liner crossing at
<br />anglee greater than 45 degrees is 1 inch, Trencher for pipe lines Shall be made
<br />of sufficient depth to provide the minimum cover from finish grade aS follows:
<br />a. 16 in. minimum cover over main liner.
<br />b. 16 in. minimum cover over control wires
<br />3. Where possible, inetall pipe adjacent to turbo or paving to minirnize interference
<br />with plants and their roots. Coordinate with landecape installer regarding
<br />proposed plant material locations.
<br />4. Keep trencher free of obstruction and debris that could tend to damage pipe and
<br />control wirer. Remove excess roil from the rite and leave grade ae, it was prior
<br />to sprinkler eyetem installation. Piping shall be routed around shrubs, trees and
<br />other permanent obrtacler.
<br />B. PIPE LINE ASSEMBLY
<br />1. Install plastic pipe ae recommended by the manufacturer and provide for
<br />expansion and contraction. Cut plastic pipe equare. Remove burrs at cut ends
<br />prior to installation ro that a smooth unobstructed flow will be obtained.
<br />2. inetall remote control valvee at locations no closer than 12 inches to walk edger,
<br />buildings, and wally. Plastic pipe and fittings shall be solvent welded u9ing
<br />solvents and methods ae recommended by manufacturer of the pipe, except
<br />where screwed connectione are required. Pipe and fittings shall be thoroughly
<br />cleaned of dirt, duet and moisture before applying Solvent with a nonrynthetic
<br />brietle brush. Care should be taken not to use an excess amount of solvent,
<br />thereby causing a burr or obstruction to form on the inside of the pipe. Allow
<br />the joints to eat at leavt 24 houre before applying preeeure on PVC pipe, Do not
<br />use PVC cement which her begun to gel. Do not attempt to make pipe
<br />connectione during inclement weather conditions.
<br />C. SPRINKLER HEADS: Large gear- driven rotary type shall be inetalled so that the top
<br />ie slightly above finish grade. If finish grade har not been established, set the top
<br />four inches above grade and lower when finish grade hae been achieved. 5prinklere,
<br />on rirere shall be set at elevatione ro that there is no interruption of the stream
<br />from the sprinkler nozzle caueed by plant material during the first growing eeaeon (1
<br />year from date of installation). Heade along curbe and walke shall be eat flush to
<br />within 1/8 inch and two to four inches away from curb or walk, except where care may
<br />overhang curb. Where care may overhang curbs, heads shall be eat eighteen inches
<br />away from back of curb. Adjust heade having an adjustment stem, for the proper
<br />radius and throw for the area involved.
<br />D. CONTROL WIRES: Shall be inetalled in a neat and orderly fashion underneath the
<br />main and lateral piper, if possible. Ten -inch loops shall be provided at each valve
<br />where control wirer, are connected. All wiree pawing under existing or future
<br />paving, construction, etc., shall be encased in plastic pipe as specified, extending at
<br />least twelve inches beyond edger of paving or construction.
<br />E. TESTING: All main lines shall be hydrostatically tested in the presence of the Owner's
<br />representative at a preseure of 100 psi for a period of time not less than four (4)
<br />house, should any leaks be found, they shall be repaired. The line shall then be
<br />retested until ratiefactory. All lateral lines downstream from the remote control
<br />valves shall be visually inspected for leake, should any be found, they shall be repaired.
<br />The line shall then be retested until satisfactory.
<br />F. 3ACKFILL AND COMPACTING: After eyetem is approved or sections thereof,
<br />backfill excavations and trenches with clean soil, free of rubbish, l3ackfill for all
<br />trelichea, regardieoe of the type of pipe covered shall be compacted to a minimum
<br />C0 of its n.7axlmum density (AA5HTO T -180). Dre55 off all areae to finish

<br />G. FINAL AP JUSTMENT: 3alance and adjuet the irrigation eystem components for
<br />t,Tfirient, proper operation. This includes controller synchronization ae well ae
<br />indlvidual oettings of control atatione.
<br />3. iNSTRUC T IONS

<br />1, Number each zone valve box on underside of valve box cover with a black
<br />waterproof marker for reference. Numbere shall match the zone numbere on

<br />3. MAINTENANCE
<br />1, Maintain the irrigation 5yatem until final acceptance of the work. Maintenance
<br />=hall include work, materials and replacements neceeeary to insure a complete
<br />properly operating eyetem,
<br />2. It will be the Owner'e responsibility to maintain the eyetem in working order
<br />during the guarantee period, performing neceeeary minor maintenance, keeping
<br />grace from obstructing the sprinkler heade and preventing vandalism and
<br />damage during the landecape maintenance operation.
<br />4. CLEANING: The Contractor Shall at all timer, keep the premises (grounde and
<br />pavements) free from accumulations of waste material or rubbish caueed by hie
<br />employees or work.
<br />NOTE: SUCTION PIPES AND FITTINGS SHALL DE HOPE HEAT FUSED. CHECK VALVE 3" AND
<br />LARGER SHALL BE SWING TYPE, 2" AND SMALLER SHALL 13E POPPET STYLE. ALL
<br />EXPOSED SUCTION & DISCHARGE PIPE ADJACENT TO THE PUMP SYSTEM SHALL
<br />DE GALVANIZED STEEL. BUTTERFLY OR BALLVALVE PROVIDED AT EACH PUMP.
