General Bulletin No. 4260
• May 23, 2000
Page 2
• For PIRANHA installations utilizing sprinkler systems in new construction, the PIRANHA water demand must
be calculated as part of the sprinkler system demand (if the point of connection is to be in the hydraulically
most remote area). The water demand for each PIRANHA system nozzle, regardless of nozzle quantity is
-$ 9Pm.
The pressure loss in the piping, valves, and fittings from the sprinkler connection to the ANSUL AUTOMAN
Regulated Release Assembiy and/or Regulated Actuator Assembly(s) must be included in the hydraulic
caiculations. In new construction, the PIRANHA wateriine piping can be connected to the nearest branch
line provided the hydrauiic calculations indicate an adequate water supply.
• For PIRANHA waterline connection to existing sprinkler piping outside the hydraulically most remote area,
connection can be made to either the nearest cross main or a sprinkler branch line. (See Figure 1, 1 a,). For
PIRANHA waterline connection to existing sprinkler piping within the hydraulically most remote area, the
PI RANHA dedicated waterline must be connected to the nearest"cross main", (See Figure 1, 1 b,) unless the
sprinkler system can be hydraulically recalculated to verify enough water pressure and flow to allow
connection to a sprinkler branch (ine (See Figure 1, 1 c).
• The PIRANHA ANSUL AUTOMAN Regulated Release Assembly and Regulated Actuator Assembly are
listed for use with water pressures up to and incfuding 100 psi. When the calculated static pressure at the
inlet to either the ANSULAUTOMAN Regulated Release or Regulated Actuator does not exceed 100 psi, the
PIRANHA dedicated waterline must include a lockable water shutoff valve, wye strainer, and low point drain
valve (1 inch minimum). (See Figures 2 and 3).
• When the water pressure at the inlet to either the ANSUL AUTOMAN Regulated Release Assembly or
Regulated Actuator Assembly exceeds 100 psi static pressure, the PI RANHA dedicated waterline will require
a primary shutoff valve, a pressure regulating (reducing) valve (to lower the pressure to below 100 psi), and
a pressure relief valve piped to a drain, in addition to the ANSUL lockable shutoff valve, wye strainer, and low
point drain valve. (See Figures 4 & 5).
The ANSU L Lockable Ball Valve is available by ordering either the 1 inch valve (P/N 423956), or the 1 1/4
inch vafve (P/N 423957), along with Padlock (P/N 423727), and Water Valve I.D. Tag (P/N 423678). The ball
valve must be installed in an accessible location that is clearfy visible, if possible. If the valve is
installed in an enclosure or above the ceiling its location must be identified by an easily located
nameplate or placard. '
You may aiso want to consider addirg a 3/4 inch union above the ANSl.L Al!TrJMAh Regulated Release
and each Regulated Actuator Assembly connected to the dedicated PIRANHA waterline, to facilitate
servicing the system.
Should you have questions regarding this bulletin please contact your domestic District Manager, International
Area Manager, or Distributor Technical Services in Marinette, Wisconsin at (715) 735-7411 or (800) 862-6785.
PIRANHA...
