March 20, 2018 <br />Re: Wood Construction Connector Compliance for 2015 International Codes & 2DI 7 Florida Codes <br />To Whom It May Concern: <br />Section 2303.5 of the 2015 International Building Code (IBC) and 2017 Florida Building Code (FBC) specifies that <br />joist hangers shall be tested per ASTM D7147 Testing and EstotulishiiV Loads of JDist Har;Ws. Previous versions of <br />the I BC and FBC required testing to comply with ASTM D1 Tel Test Method for Mechanical Fasteners in Wood. Both <br />methods determine a connector's allowable load as the IcweA of the following: <br />1. Lowest ultimate of three tests (or average of 6) vAth a safety factor of 3 <br />2. Average load atl/8-inch deflection <br />3. Calculabons per American Wood Council National Design Specification for Wood Construction (NDS) <br />The primary changes in ASTM D7147 are requirements to measure properties of the tested materials, such as steel <br />strength, fastener strength, and wood specific gravity. The tested ultimate loads must be adjusted when tested <br />material properties exceed the specified properties. <br />ICC Evaluation Services (]CC -ES) revised AC13 Acceptance Crifivis for Joist Hangers and Similar Devkes in <br />October 2016 to incorporate a rnethodology to evaluate products to the 2015 I -Codes. Simpson Strong -Tie is worldrig <br />on re-evaluating wood Construction connector loads to the new Standard to update our product evalualtion reports to <br />the 2015 I -Codes. As soon as the updated evaluabor reports are completed, we will apply for Florida Product <br />Approvals. <br />However, reevaluating a large number of products will tka time. While rnariLftclurers work with product cerfification <br />agencies to update their wood connector evahiation reports, we recommend that building departments under the <br />2015 I -Codes and 2017 Florida Codes continue to acce-pt code reports showing compliance to the 2012 and 2014 <br />editions, respectively, until July 2018. <br />The information in this laftr is valid until 6/3Qr2D18 when it will be re-evalusted by Simpson Striong-Tie.
