<br />HOl'SEHOLD FIRE WAR:'I;I:'I;(; EQl'Il'~IE~T <br /> <br />72-31 <br /> <br />2-4.5.5 Each electrical lire warning system and each single <br />station smoke detector shall have an integral test means to <br />allow the householder to check the sntem and the sensitiv- <br />ity of the detector(s). . <br /> <br />2-4.6 Monitoring Integrity of Installation Conductors. <br />A.II means of interconnecting initiating devices or notifica- <br />tion appliances shall be monitored for the integrity of the <br />interconnecting pathways up to the connections to the <br />device or appliance so that the occurrence of a single open <br />or single ground fault. which prevents normal operation of <br />the system. is indicated by a distinctive trouble signal. <br /> <br />I Exception No.1: Condudors con1U'cting multiple station a/anns, <br />prol.;ded a single fault on the wiring cannot prevent single station <br />operation of an)' of the interconnected deuctors. <br /> <br />EXCl'ption ,\"0. 2: Circuits exlmding from single or multiple sta- <br />I tion alarms to required remote notification appliances, provided <br />operation of the test feature on any deuctor causes all C0111U'cted <br />appliances to actimte. <br /> <br />2-4.7 Combination System. <br /> <br />2-4.7.1 Where common wiring is employed for a combina- <br />tion system. the equipment for other than the fire warning <br />signaling system shall be connected to the common wiring of <br />the system so that shon circuits. open circuits, grounds, or <br />any fault in this equipment or interconnection between this <br />equipment and the fire warning system wiring does not <br />interfere with the supervision of the fire warning system or <br />prevent alarm or trouble signal operation. <br /> <br />2-4.7.2 In a firelburglar system. the operation shall be as <br />follows: <br /> <br />(a) A fire alarm signal shall take precedence or be deady <br />recognizable over any other signal even when the nonfire <br />alarm signal is initiated first. <br /> <br />(b) Distinctive alarm signals shall be used so that fire <br />alarms can be distinguished from other functions such as <br />burglar alarms. The use of a common sounding appliance <br />for fire and burglar alarms shall be permitted where distinc- <br />tive signals are used. (Set 2-2.2.2.) <br /> <br />2-4.8 Low Power Wireless Systems. Household fire warn- <br />ing systems utilizing low power wireless transmission of sig- <br />nals within the protected household shall comply with the <br />requirements of Section 3-13. <br /> <br />Exception: Paragraph 3-13.4.5 shall not apply. <br /> <br />2-4.9 Supervising Station Systems. <br /> <br />2-4.9.1 Any communications method described in Section <br />4-5 shall be permitted for transmission of signals from house- <br />hold fire warning equipment to a supervising station. All of the <br />provisions of Section 4-5 shall apply. as appropriate. <br /> <br />Exception No. J: Only 0111' telePhone li1U'sluzll be required for one-. <br />and two-family residences. <br />Exception 10.'0. 2: Each D.-4CT shall be required to be programmed <br />to call a single DACR number on1.". <br /> <br />Exception No.3: Each DACT seT'!'ing a one- or twojami1." resi- <br />dence shall transmit a test signal to its associated reeeiver at least <br />monthly. <br /> <br />2-4.9.2* On receipt of an alarm signal from household fire <br />warning equipment, the supervising station shall immedi- <br />ate'" (within 90 seconds) retransmit the alarm to the public <br />fire communications center. <br /> <br />Exreption: The supm.ising station shall be pamitted to contact the <br />residence for verificatiotl of an alonll condition and, where acrept- <br />able assu ranee is provided within 90 seconds that the fire service is <br />not nuded. retransmission of an a/ann to the public seroice fire com- <br />munications crour sholl not be required. <br /> <br />2-5 Installation. <br />2.5.1 General. <br /> <br />2.5.1.1 General Provisions. <br /> <br />I 2-5.1.1.1* All equipment shall be installed in a workman- <br />like manner. <br /> <br />2-5.1.1.2 All devices shall be so located and mounted that <br />accidental operation is not caused by jarring or vibration. <br /> <br />2-5.1.1.3 All installed household fire warning equipment <br />shall be mounted so as to be supported independently of its <br />attachment to wires. <br /> <br />2.5.1.1.4 All equipment shall be restored to normal as <br />promptly as possible after each alarm or test. <br /> <br />2-5.1.1.5 The supplier or installing contractor shall pro- <br />vide the owner with: <br /> <br />(a) An instruction booklet illustrating typical installation <br />layouts. <br />(b) Instruction charts describing the operation, method <br />and frequency of testing, and proper maintenance of house- <br />hold fire warning equipment. <br />(c) Printed information for establishing a household <br />emergency evacuation plan. <br />(d) Printed information to inform owners where they can <br />obtain repair or replacement service. and where and how <br />pans requiring regular replacement (such as batteries or <br />bulbs) can be obtained within 2 .....eeks. <br /> <br />12-5.1.2 Interconnection of Detectors or Multiple Station <br />Alarms. <br /> <br />(a) Where the interconnected wiring is unsupervised, no <br />I more than 18 multiple station alarms shall be intercon- <br />nected in..a multiple station configuration. <br />(b) Where the interconnecting wiring is supervised. the <br />number of interconnected detectors shall be limited to 64. <br /> <br />I 2-5.1.2.1* Interconnection that causes other alarms to <br />sound shall be limited to an individual family living unit. <br />Remote annunciation from single or multiple station alarms <br />shall be permitted. <br /> <br />12-5.1.2.2 No more than 12 smoke alarms shall be intercon- <br />nected in a multiple station connection. The remainder of <br />the alarms shall be permitted to be of other types. <br /> <br />2-5.2* Detector Location and Spacing. <br /> <br />2-5.2.1* Smoke Detectors <br /> <br />2-5.2.1.1 Smoke detectors in rooms with ceiling slopes <br />greater than I ft in 8 ft (1 01 in 8 01) horizontally shall be <br />located at the high side of the room. <br /> <br />1996 Edition <br />
