<br />72-32 <br /> <br />~.-\T1()~.\L FIRE AI_\R\I COOE <br /> <br />2-5.2.1.2 .-\ smoke detector installed in a stairwell shall be <br />so located as to ensure that smoke rising in the stairwell can- <br />not be prevemed from reaching the detector by an imerven- <br />ing door or obstruction. <br /> <br />2-5.2.1.3 .-\ smoke detector installed to detect a fire in the <br />basement shall be located in close proximity to lhe stairway <br />leading to the floor above. <br /> <br />I 2-5.2.1.4 The smoke detector installed to comply with <br />2-2.1.1.1 on a story without a separate sleeping area shall be <br />located in close proximity to the stairway leading to the floor <br />above. <br /> <br />2-5.2.1.5* Smoke detectors shall be mounted on the ceiling <br />at least 4 in. (102 mm) from a wall or on a wall with the top <br />of the detector not less than 4 in. (102 mm) nor more than <br />12 in. (305 mm) below the ceiling. <br /> <br />Exception: Where the mounting suiface might become consider- <br />ably wanner or cooler than the room, such as a poorly insulllted ceil- <br />ing below an unfinisMd allic or an exterior wall. the detectors shall <br />be mounted on an inside wall. <br /> <br />2-5.2...6 Smoke detectors shall not be located within kitch- <br />ens or garages, or in other spaces where temperatures can <br />I fall below 400F (40C) or exceed 1000F (380C). Smoke detec- <br />tors shall not be located closer than 3 ft (0.9 m) horizontally <br />from: <br /> <br />(a) The door to a kitchen. <br />(b) The door to a bathroom containing a tub or shower. <br />(c) The supply registers of a forced air heating or cooling <br />I system, and outside of the airflow from those registers. <br /> <br />Exception: Detectors specifically listed for the application. <br /> <br />2-5.2.2* Heat Detectors. <br /> <br />2-5.2.2.. On smooth ceilings. heat detectors shall be <br />installed within the strict limitations of their listed spacing. <br /> <br />2.5.2.2.2 For sloped ceilings having a rise greater than 1 ft <br />in 8 ft (I m in 8 m) horizontally, the detector shall be located <br />on or near the ceiling at or within 3 ft (0.9 m) of the peak. <br />The spacing of additional detectors, if any. shall be based on <br />a horizontal distance measurement. not on a measurement <br />along the slope of the ceiling. <br /> <br />2-5.2.2.3* Heat detectors shall be mounted on the ceiling <br />at least 4 in. The installation of wiring <br />and equipment shall be in accordance with the requirements <br />of NFPA 70. Natio7U11 Electrical Code. Article 760. <br /> <br />1996 Edition <br /> <br />2-6 Maintenance and Tests. <br /> <br />2-6..* Maintenance. Where batteries are used as a Source <br />of energy. they shall be replaced in accordance with the rec- <br />ommendations of the alarm equipment manufactUJ'er. <br /> <br />I EXCfption: Batteries d"scribed ill 2-3.3(11). <br /> <br />2-6.2* Tests. <br /> <br />, 2-6.2.1 Single and Multiple Station Smoke Alanns. Home- <br />owners shall inspect and test smoke alarms and all con- <br />nected appliances in accordance with the manufacturer's <br />instructions at least monthly. <br /> <br />2-6.2.2 Fire Alarm Systems. Homeowners shall test sys- <br />tems in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and <br />,shall ha\'e every household fire alarm system having a con- <br />trol panel tested by a qualified service technician at least <br />everv 3 vears. This test shall be conducted according to the <br />method; of Chapter i. <br /> <br />2-7 Markings and Instructions. A.II household fire warn- <br />ing equipment or systems shall be plainly marked with the <br />following information on the unit: <br /> <br />(a) Manufacturer's or listee's name, address. and model <br />number; <br />(b) A mark or certification that the unit has been <br />approved or listed by a testing laboratory; <br />(c) Electrical rating (where applicable); <br />(d) Temperature rating (where applicable); <br />(e) Spacing rating (where applicable); <br />(f) Operating instructions; <br />(g) Test instructions; <br />(h) Maintenance instructions; <br />(i) Replacement and service instructions. <br /> <br />Exception: WMre space limitario1lS prohibit inclusion of 2-7 (g). <br />'(h). and (i), a label or plaque suilllble for penllanent atlllchment <br />within the lilling unit. or a monufacturers momull. shall be pro- <br />vided with the equiPment and referenced on the equipment. In the <br />case of a household fire iL'arning system. the required infonTUltion <br />sluJlI be prominently displa.wd at the control panel. <br /> <br />Chapter 3 Protected Premises Fire Alarm Systems <br /> <br />3-1 Scope. This chapter provides requirements for the <br />application. installation, and performance of fire alarm sys- <br />tems, including fire alarm and supervisory signals. within <br />protected premises. <br /> <br />3.2 General. The systems covered in this chapter are <br />intended to be used for the protection of life by automati- <br />cally indicating the necessity for evacuation of the building <br />or fire area. and for the protection of property through the <br />automatic notification of responsible persons and for the <br />automatic activation of fire safety functions.
