I I
JELD- WE1'jl : Wood _ Premium Wood Exterior Doors - Entrance - Installation & Finishing Page 1 of 3

.;

TION AND MAINTENANCE

Improper torage, handling, finishing or installation of any JELD-WEN@ Premium
Wood Do rs may result in severe damage to them and may void the warranty. The
following uidelines will help maintain the high quality of these doors.

AND HANDLING

1. S re doors flat on a level surface in a dry, well-ventilated building. Doors
s ould be kept at least 3-1/2" off the floor and should have protective
verings under the bottom door and over the top. Covering should protect
d ors from dirt, water and abuse, but allow for air circulation under and
a ound the stack. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight.
2. D not subject interior doors to extremes of heat and/or humidity. Prolonged
e posure may cause damage. Buildings where humidity and temperature
a e controlled provide the best storage facilities (recommended conditions:
3 % to 50% RH and 300F to gooF).
3. not install doors in buildings that have wet plaster or cement unless they
h ve been properly finished. Do not store doors in buildings with excessive
oisture content - HVAC systems should be operating and balanced.
4. oors should always be handled with clean hands or while wearing clean
g oves.
5. oors should be lifted and carried when being moved, not dragged across
e another.

FINISHI~G PREPARATION
Failure t~ comply with these guidelines will affect your warranty

1. o ensure uniform moisture exposure and dimensional control, all surfaces
i c1uding the top and bottom must be treated equally.
2. efore applying first finishing coat, remove all handling marks, raised grain
cuffs, burnishes and other undesirable blemishes by block sanding all
urfaces in a horizontal position. sand entire door lightly with 180 grit
and paper. To avoid cross-grain scratches sand in the direction of the grain.
3. fter sanding, clean entire door with a slightly damp cloth, removing all dust
nd foreign debris. <Avoid caustic or abrasive materials.)
4. i necessary, adjust components before finishing. (yVood panels can "float.")
arefully realign with a wood block and hammer.
5. efore finishing, hang the door. Then remove to finish properly. Do not
Inish during or after high-moisture periods. Door must be dry before
nishing.
6. void dark colored finishes if door is exposed to direct sunlight. This will
educe the chance of warping and veneer checking.
7. ertain species of wood contain chemicals that react unfavorably to some
Inishes or to foreign materials in the finishing system. Whenever possible,
est your finish prior to application and eliminate the use of steel wool on
are wood, avoid rusty containers or any other contaminate.
8. oftwoods like pine, fir, and hemlock take stains differently and may appear

nt1n./ /ld~-wen.com/attributes/text tmol.cfm/attribute id/3207

4/4/2007
