welded with a hand welder. The seam width must be as wide as one
created with an automatic welder (approximatety 1-1/2" wide).
2. Hand-held woelding equipment is also available. Hand welders (guns) are typically
only used to w+eld flashings and areas where an automatic welder cannot be
used. After the preheated nozzfe tip is applied in the overlap area and the
materiat starts to flow, immediately follow with a hand roller to psess the heated
membrane surfaces togethe with slow, even mavements. Keep the roller within
one inch of the noale tip. Angle the hot air tool so that the flawing air faces the
roHer. The temperature of the hot-air tool shall be adjusted so that a minimum of
smoke is developed and material from the bottom af the sheet begins to soften
and flowfrom the seam. Seam strength may be tested when cool. For best
results, testing seams 8 hours after hot air welding is recommended.
C. Quality Control af Seams
1. After seaming, the seams are checked for integrity with a blunt-ended probe. Any
openings or "ishmouths" are to be reRaired with a hand-held hot-air tool fitted with a
narrow nozzle tip and with a roller.
2. Each day the contractor shall attempt to pull ap0rt several sections af welded seams
to test the quity af the welds. Should the vwelds be defiaent, a more thorough
examination of the work performed must be carried out and necessary repairs made.
Mule-Hide's PVC Cut Edge Sealant is used to seal the membrane edges where
reirforcing fabric is cut and expased.
3.09 Flashing Installation
A. PVC Coated Metal Flashing
1. PVC Coated Metal Flashing shall be installed in acoordance with Mule-Hide
Roofing Systems' standard details.
2. Complete all metalvwrk concurrertitly with roofing and flashings so that a
watertight condition exists daily.
3. PVC Coated Metal may be used at all peaks, valleys and slope intersections
where the net change in slope ecceeds 1-V2" in 12". In some cases reinforced
membrane may be suffiaent for ridges but should be fastened securely at I
transition areas. Contact the Mule-Hide Custorrrer Service Department for
specific recommendations.
4. PVC Coated Metal shall be installed to provide adequate resistance to bending
and to allow for noRnal thermal expansion and contradion.
5. All metal jants are to be watertight and staggered over nailer jants to prevent
joints in nailers and jarrts in metal from lining up.
6. Base flashings shall extend a minimum af 8" up vertical surface.s where possible.
7. All metal flashings and t+erminations shall be securely fastened in the plane af the
roof deck with fasteners recommended by MuleHide.
8. Fasteners used to secure flashings to wood nailers shall be stainless steel,
galvanized metal or other coROSiorresistant material, with a head diameter af
not less than 3J8", and with fastener penetration into the nrood nailer ofi at least
3/4".
13
